I havent posted any update for awhile because work on the project was pretty slow, not much to visually see happen. Well I have it to the point now that I am going to test fire, but first I have a slight issue.
When I started my last sks project I made up a 7.62x39 Blank for testing. I used 209 shot shell primers that I used to use to shoot 22 cal pellets out of my AR. So tonight after I built up the hammer face on the AR hammer, I loaded in a blank and fired it. Worked great. popped it out and stuck another one in the chamber, dropped the bolt and it slam fired. So I figured the fireing pin must be stuck forward from the thickness of the hammer being alittle to much. but once I opened it up the fireing pin was loose. so in with a new primer, drop the bolt and slam fired again. Pulled the bolt and fireing pin, hit it with brake clean made sure it was good and loose. 5 more slam fires. so now im assuming it has to just be due to the fact that I am dropping the bolt on a chambered round rather than picking one up from the mag. I did notice there is not much room for the fireing pin in the grove cut in the bolt carrier, so I ground alittle more material off of that to see if it helped. never had a slam fire after that. So I feel pretty confident that it is ready to try out, but I will be single loading it for a dozen rounds or so to be sure.
I should note that during every slam fire the hammer was staying down and not "riding the bolt" so I know it was a problem with the rifle not my modifications. I had it to the range and put about 50 rounds through it flawlessly as a stock SKS before tear down.
I made up an AK style magazine for it. I looked at my 5 round ak mag but I just didnt see an easy way to make it work, so for now I will be using Steel Promags with the duckbill cut off and an "L" welded on. I will include a picture of the mags, and a pic of the AK mag on top of my modified mag.
I also picked up a barrel threading kit from ebay. I bought an AK muzzle brake last year that will go on it. I plan on taking off the 2 inches I can legally remove, cut off the bayonet mount and move the front sight back and thread the barrel. This should make the end of the gun look much better.
I will be making a forestock by hand, probably will be making 2, one stock looking the other with a firegrip carved out of the wood.
I also bought an AK side mount quick release rail system that will be added to my lower once I get it firing.
I think that covers most of it for now. I will post up some pictures.
Also with the way I have found to mount the lower it can be mounted to ANY sks with very minor modifications, all of which can be returned to make it back to factory. The front is held in place by 2 number 10 machine screws, i drilled and tapped the pin hole that holds in the bolt hold open setup, and the rear is held in with a 1/4 inch bolt, I removed the spring type piece that snaps onto the trigger group and found that there was a hole under that that is just under the size needed for 1/4 inch tap. Drilled it out and tapped it. To return this to a stock gun all I need to do is put a bolt in the front and reinstall the trigger group latch. Unfortunately due to trial and error I already drilled out another portion of the SKS in an earlier attempt to mount my lower, which is not fixable so this one cannot be returned to a stock configuration.
