Another sks build aluminum lower

if you want to really, really get a rise, work some of that bubba magic and design this concept for svt40.i have a shooter i would love to saddle down to a firm fitting modern stock design.im sure im not the only one that would like to see somekind of aftermarket outthere for svt40 shooters.

Very interesting build. I like it, really like it! Keep us posted and keep up the great work! We have a nation full of talent and nice to see it going to good use. Myself, I would like to see it run ak mags

I was thinking about making it run AK mags but I only have one. And I don't see them readily available so for now it will be the modified promags. I may machine it in the future for AK mags.

Thanks for the support

I havent posted any update for awhile because work on the project was pretty slow, not much to visually see happen. Well I have it to the point now that I am going to test fire, but first I have a slight issue.

When I started my last sks project I made up a 7.62x39 Blank for testing. I used 209 shot shell primers that I used to use to shoot 22 cal pellets out of my AR. So tonight after I built up the hammer face on the AR hammer, I loaded in a blank and fired it. Worked great. popped it out and stuck another one in the chamber, dropped the bolt and it slam fired. So I figured the fireing pin must be stuck forward from the thickness of the hammer being alittle to much. but once I opened it up the fireing pin was loose. so in with a new primer, drop the bolt and slam fired again. Pulled the bolt and fireing pin, hit it with brake clean made sure it was good and loose. 5 more slam fires. so now im assuming it has to just be due to the fact that I am dropping the bolt on a chambered round rather than picking one up from the mag. I did notice there is not much room for the fireing pin in the grove cut in the bolt carrier, so I ground alittle more material off of that to see if it helped. never had a slam fire after that. So I feel pretty confident that it is ready to try out, but I will be single loading it for a dozen rounds or so to be sure.

I should note that during every slam fire the hammer was staying down and not "riding the bolt" so I know it was a problem with the rifle not my modifications. I had it to the range and put about 50 rounds through it flawlessly as a stock SKS before tear down.

I made up an AK style magazine for it. I looked at my 5 round ak mag but I just didnt see an easy way to make it work, so for now I will be using Steel Promags with the duckbill cut off and an "L" welded on. I will include a picture of the mags, and a pic of the AK mag on top of my modified mag.

I also picked up a barrel threading kit from ebay. I bought an AK muzzle brake last year that will go on it. I plan on taking off the 2 inches I can legally remove, cut off the bayonet mount and move the front sight back and thread the barrel. This should make the end of the gun look much better.

I will be making a forestock by hand, probably will be making 2, one stock looking the other with a firegrip carved out of the wood.

I also bought an AK side mount quick release rail system that will be added to my lower once I get it firing.

I think that covers most of it for now. I will post up some pictures.

Also with the way I have found to mount the lower it can be mounted to ANY sks with very minor modifications, all of which can be returned to make it back to factory. The front is held in place by 2 number 10 machine screws, i drilled and tapped the pin hole that holds in the bolt hold open setup, and the rear is held in with a 1/4 inch bolt, I removed the spring type piece that snaps onto the trigger group and found that there was a hole under that that is just under the size needed for 1/4 inch tap. Drilled it out and tapped it. To return this to a stock gun all I need to do is put a bolt in the front and reinstall the trigger group latch. Unfortunately due to trial and error I already drilled out another portion of the SKS in an earlier attempt to mount my lower, which is not fixable so this one cannot be returned to a stock configuration.

Nice work!! I have an AR trigger group on my SKS. They work great. The first build , was using all AR trigger group parts. But I found that the amount of work (welding to the hammer face) was a lot and if I wanted to make more then one, it was going to be hard....everyone would have to be hand fitted to each rifle. So what I did was to cut off the top part of the SKS hammer ( cut it , at about mid point) and weld it back on to the AR trigger. That way you can jig it, and weld everyone the same. After welding, you can heat the whole trigger / hammer up and temper as you would like. I've used my setup for about 1 year now, and has work great, Have an AK stock and lower forearm fitted, and I'm using Tapco 20 round pinned to 5 mags.....didn't want any problems with the powers that be, so didn't do the SKS-D/AK mag conversion.
The main body of my lower stock, where the trigger group goes (don't want to call it a lower) was made out of wood, for R&D purposes , and then I'll make a mold and , cast it ....carbon fiber,...or aluminum,...or steel, haven't decided.
Anyways, keep up the great work!! looks great.

I see a small hole...for the safety??? the safety is very important, you can uses the old type safety that came in your lower kit, just have to make it longer, or uses a new piece of round bar, notch it, etc...heat treat...etc.

I have an idea for a safety. But nothing yet. Never bought a lower parts kit just a trigger group so I don't have an AR safety. This is my second build with an AR trigger in an sks my other one is on here to I'm pretty sure you commented in it as well. I didn't want to cut the hammer incase the weld broke but knowing that you had good luck with it might mean I'll try it next time. My other idea is using an AK trigger group in it. Well see how this one works out and go from there. I'd love to have someone with the proper equipment produce a run of these I think they would sell pretty quick.

Thanks

Yup , that's what I thought too.... (Selling them)But too many projects on the go. LOL I have a stock duplicator , so making stocks to fit is not a problem. It alway seems like time flys by ......

we can do that for you, ones you have the prototype set and working.
also let me know if you need any ar15 lower parts, i have dozens of take off hammers, trigger, safetys. in the shop

Short update, I had it to the range yesterday and my magazine isn't feeding properly. I'm not sure if it is a Pro-mag issue or not, I think it just isn't tipped up enough in the front. So I will do some reworking to that and see if I can get it to function better. It feeds rounds from the left side of the mag fine but the right side jams. I also suffered one light strike on the primer, may have to build up the hammer face a little more.

I had noting but issues with steel promags...

I have read a lot of issues with them but honestly I have put a couple hundred rounds through these mags without any issues until I cut the duck bill off. But I could have just been lucky haha.

Still along way to go yet, thanks for all the comments and input!
Still on the "to do" list:
-install enhanced power WOLFF AR Hammer Spring (waiting on them to come in)
-Add shim to the side mount so scope sits centered to the bore.
-Remove front site and cut off bayonet mount.
-Cut barrel to 18.5" and thread for muzzle brake.
-Finish shaping buttstock and stain it to match.
-Attach buttstock more securely.
-Make new lower hand guard.
-Fine tune magazine angle to fix FTF issues.
-Add material to the inside of the receiver to take up some slack left to right.
-Clean up trigger.

That about covers what I can think of right now, so enough talking heres a few pictures of how it looks today.
