I just picked up my new SKS and I have cleaned off all of the cosmoline (I thing thats what it was covered in). Some of the cosmoline has turned into a rock hard appoxy like substance on the spike bayonet. Is there something that will take this off? I don't really want to use steel wool.

You could try a Paint stripper heat gun. (done gently and with great care/avoid the wood/don't mix heat with any solvents, etc).
