Since we have had heavy rain lately, I was waiting for the rain to stop or slow down. Last night (Saturday night) I kept checking the weather network and couldn't go to sleep at all as I know that this is the best opportunity to go for another buck this season. By 4am the website said that my spot only had less than 1mm rain, I told my wife that I was going. Took off around 4:30am, got to my spot a little after 5:30am. But cuz my spot was on an 'island' in the middle of the river and the riverbed was all flooded, I rolled up my pants, hanged the boots around my neck and walked through the water barefooted. Man, that was cold!
I got into my position merely before 6am, sat in bush and waited watching the deer trails I found back in early Oct. Right after I sat down, I heard a whistle. They were there! After 30 min I saw the movement, a buck and a doe. But I couldn't tell if that was the 4x4 I was after. Only judging by the body size I thought that was my boy! So I stood up slowly raising my SKS loaded with only one round of 123 gr hornady SP (really I only loaded one round, otherwise I might have started another jungle war
) The buck was broadsiding me but trotting slowly. I blew a whistle, he stopped trying to figure out where I was. I let the shot go, 70 yards, took out his lung artery, entering from his lung and exiting from the base of his neck. He jumped and dragged his body slowly away. I knew I got him good, so I sat down and waited for 10 mins. Turned out that he only walked another 15 yards.
Now the real fun part began. When I approached this guy, I realized that this was a real decent sized buck, but only 3x3. Only dragged 10 yards and I was out of breath, so I figured this guy was definitely over 200 lbs. It was like a pig! I managed to drag it to the waterside and decided to walk through the water again to drive out to the town to phone my friend in Vancouver! So I left my jacket on top of the buck and left. Two hours later we were back to the spot, dragged the buck through the water. Man, that was fun! And two of us still had problem loading the buck into my truck, but finally we got it in.
I spent the whole day skinning, gutting and butchering. Man, I'm tired but very pleased! Looking at the meat hanging in my garage, you might think that I just butchered a good sized pig! It was fat, thick fat under the skin and up on the ass. I've never seen a buck that fat! I figured this buck weighed about 230lbs. But the picture really didn't tell the truth very well though.
Count the loading clip, only one bullet missing.
