Another SKS Optic Mount Question....

I apologize if this has been beaten to death, but I just wanted some personal opinions on SKS mounts.

My question is this, is the gas tube sight mount worth it at all? I don't want to put an $80 scout scope mount on the rear sight, and then spend another $50-80 for the optics....I'm almost up to the cost of the whole rifle and it's really just a fun plinker for me. So should I just keep the iron sights, or will the gas tube mount be good enough? I don't shoot that often, maybe once a month...so I'm not that worried about it holding a perfect 0, I can always adjust on the fly, unless zombies start populating the masses.

There are a couple of gas tube mount options out there. The one that came with my Crapco stock sucked. I went with a scout mount. I can't speak to the others. If you want an option that is inexpensive and trustworthy, try getting some tech sights. Better than irons.

Unfortunately with the sks nothing is easy to mount optics to. I would agree with either leaving the rifle as is, or upgrading to a tech sight.

The gas tube mounts available won't hold zero - that's for sure, and a scout/pistol scope set-up will easily cost you more than the rifle. Come to think of it, and reasonable scope will probablt cost you roughly what the rifle did, even without adding the mount to the equation.

There have been some success stories with people treading the hole on recevier style mounts to prevent movement, but unless you're handy with tools this isn't going to be an option.

Best bet is tech sights for your budget.

Best option, BC tactical scout. Nothing is permanent with this, just remove the rear sight and spring put the Scout mount on. Find yourself a red dot and enjoy. I've tried the gas tube mount, it can't hold a zero as you can never get it back to the zeroed position after cleaning. As for the receiver mount, yes you can make it stable but it requires some drilling and taping. And all the while your trying out the different mounts your wasting time and ammo. Go for the scout, I think it's under a $100, a cheap red dot for around $50 and if your rifle is even half decent you'll be grouping in the 3-4 inches at 100.
