Another SL8 conversion thread

Can you get them across the border? What zero capacity?

I've owned the HK33 mags forever and a day, prior to our society being more secure:rolleyes:. And I simply blocked the ones here, cut out a spot in the magazine insert and then rivetted in the bottom mag plate through the hole. Now, saying all that, who knows how an individual Customs person may 'interpret' the legislation.

My opinion is, as long as it's blocked and 'permanently' pinned as per the CC and FA, they should be importable. However, we all know that it is hit and miss. I would never rely on mail importation. I'm not slagging, just saying the legislation is so convoluted to the point of being ....... (fill in the appropriate word).

I haven't personally imported newly acquired magazines to have any expertise in that field. Just an opinion.

There does seem to be some normal commerce in that regard still in this country, but I have heard numerous reputable horror stories.

Thanks to the rest for the comments guys.

I like some other conversions that I have seen, but for a Canuck lad, this rifle meets the need. Or at least until some other Martha sees it, and weeps uncontrollably until it is banned. Don't forget, it's for the children.

Here is a family pic.

Thank the gawds that I can only take the one out off the property. Could you imagine the carnige that would happen if I was actually allowed to take all of them from my house to the range and back? Women would faint, small children would cry, grown men would wimper.... I thank the CFC every day and it's infinite wisdom to protect the population of this city from the likes of me.

Awesome! I love the HK collection. Really nice job on the G36 conversion.

Just curious here. It looks like the flash supressor is the same model on the G36E barrel as on the other rifles. Is it possible to have the original SL8 barrel threaded to take this flash suppressor?

It's almost exact. Of course it is a 556 hole, rather than a 30 cal hole. So, an HK33 flash hider would work just fine. And I guess in reality you could use the G3 flash hider, there are a few more of those around. There are two flat spots on the 36E flash hider, and I am assuming they are there to assist with the install as it allows a regular wrench to be used.

So the answer is yes, you could in theory take a regular SL8 heavy barrel and have it machined down to 36E diameter and install the flash hider. The only thing missing would be the bayonet lug. If you just wanted to thread the barrel, keep the original profile and put on the flash hider, that would be simple.

The install and removal of the barrel is as easy as an AR barrel. There are a few barrel wrenches around, and guys have them for sale on HKpro.com. With the wrench actually a little bit easier, as you don't have to line up the barrel nut with the gas tube hole. Supposed to be 65ft lbs torgue.

I have read a couple article where guys did machine down the SL8 barrel themselves. From the ones I read, they did not achieve what they termed as "very good success". Whatever that measure was????
I didn't shoot the Hbarrel enough to determine or test it to be able to comment on the normal barrel accuracy.

I've got about 50 rounds with this new barrel at 25yds. So far, I'm pleased.

I've fired mine with the original barrel and the groupings were within an inch at 40m so I was happy with that. I figure putting an HK flash supressor on the original barrel would be cheaper than getting a G36E barrel. I'm not really concerned about having a bayonet lug. And as for the sight/carry handle, would you consider it worth getting or are there better alternatives out there?

I'm torn on the 3X sight. It has the most narrow field of view I have ever seen on any optic. Even with my nose up close, it's a very small aperture and not the easiest to pick up, especially with any speed.
However I really like the small donut with fine cross hair reticule that is inside. Somewhat similar to an Eotech.
There are also ranging lines in the bottom left image of the sight, but I haven't used them. And to be honest may never use them enough to really care.
The glass is very good.
It was easy to centre. It has a continuous smooth screw that you have to utilize an allen wrench for adjustment. Therefore, you are not able to do "clicks" for various distances while maintaining a centre hold. I'm use to using the "open gate" method of clicks with my C79 Elcans on my ARs/M16/'C8' for pre set distance adjustments. And to be honest, I really like that feature.

So there you go. It looks kind of funky LCF 8/10, (always important), has good glass and reticule, but is small and hard to pick up.

I think most people would prefer having just a flat top picurweenie rail, with an Eotech or other optic of choice. But I'm going to go with what is on there for awhile and make a better decision after culling the herd a bit in the spring.

As far as the barrel is concerned, I found the original HBarrel to be quite front end heavy, especially with the new skelton stock. It was a very nice change/feel to have on the light barrel. In my opinion, the way it should.

The gas block is easily removed by knocking out the roll pins. Then I'm sure any competent smith or machinist could thread a flash hider on the front. I would be really tempted to have him contour the barrel to original diameter at the same time. But again, that's just me.

I picked up this G36E barrel for what I believe to be an acceptable price. I've seen them advertised for up $800:eek: which I believe to be almost out of reach. But I've paid more money for stupider things:redface:, so that's something each guy has to determine for himself. I'm thinking contour of the barrel and thread should be in the $150 range. Just a flash hider thread $25-$50ish. Guess it's who ya know too may help with the cost.
