So i don't know much about pistols. But I'm looking for a good budget handgun. I can only buy one this year and i have it narrowed down to a few.

new Sig p250 - 9mm
new Canik tp9sa - 9mm
used (police trade in?) beretta 92s - 9mm

What would be the best buy for range plinking? Might also use for an introduction into competitive shooting later on. I don't have a chance to test fire or handle before buying, as i will be buying them online. Only reference i have is i have handled a glock 17, seems bulky but fine. and a 1911 which was sweet. and i have fired a s&w 686, that was the sweetest.

Any input would be helpful, or other pistols in the same price range i hadn't considered would be helpful too.
 
If you can handle them at a store, do that. Better, if you can shoot / test them at a range, even better.
Everyone else will give their personal opinion over a pistol that may not be the same opinion you may have.

Most people end up selling their first pistol for various reasons (like buying the S&W M&P9). I'm sure that will evoke a fun response.
But yeah, to actually answer the question out of those three, I would choose the Sig 250, but instead get a Sig 320. :) I got nothing against the Canik, but do not like Berettas angle/feel in my hands.
 
Handguns, far far more than rifles, are about feel. You need to go to the gun store and handle a few before you can really make a choice. I picked up a lot of guns before I went with a plain Jane CZ 85. And for the cost you can pick one up, new or used, I say you need to take a look at one.
 
Of those mentioned personally I'd go Beretta. I'm a 1911 guy though. If you liked the revolver buy one. They do come up used for only a couple hundred bucks more than the Beretta
For a range toy buy what you want and really enjoy your choice. If it means waiting or financing its worth it in the end. You only live once
 
I like my 1911 as well in 45 ACP. Personally I think everyone should own one but that's just me. I agree that you should go to a range or store and handle as many as possible before making your decision.
 
Your hand size makes a big difference on what gun you will like. As far as cost of the gun that should be down on your list because you will spend many times the gun cost on ammo over the lifetime of the gun. Personally I like a steel gun over a plastic gun due to the weight of the steel, I like longer bbl. over shorted due to the weight as well. I like rubber grips on a revolver but some revolvers have different grip style than others and that just works. The 9mm ammo is the least costly after .22LR. If you were to go .45ACP that would be much more costly, at that point you would need to get into handloading. A revolver would shoot less ammo in a session as it only holds 6, a single action less still as it takes longer to load/unload. And in the winter a revolver doesn't spray the brass into the snow if you're saving brass. Many people start with a .22LR and that isn't a bad idea much cheaper to shoot for one thing. A revolver can be easier to shoot in single action due to much less trigger pressure than dual action, say 10+ pounds vs. 5 pounds. Revolvers are a little more money to buy as they are harder to make.
 
If it is a 9mm you want then go for some quality. I asked the same question a short time ago and someone told me to spend the few extra dollars and by a CZ. I bought on in boxing day sale CZ SP-01 Shadow and do not regret it one bit!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome firearm when bought under $1000.00 although......The IWI Jericho is one well built pistol for the price they are. JMHO
