Any shiny or dull areas are oil and grease

i saw an mp marked #4 a few months ago at the north battleford gun show in good + condition and the asking price was 1,100$. my first time at this particular show so wasn't sure how long the seller had been carrying it around for

Likely not for long. There were only 1020 MP marked No4 MkI* rifles issued to my knowledge. They aren't consecutively marked. Some are D&Ted on the left side of the butt socket for a Parker Hale target sight. The two I have seen in person with this mod were also glass bedded and had the fore ends relieved for even upward pressure on the barrel.

I have one of these rifles. The other was at a friend's place He purchased it last year in Calgary. It was one of those pre arranged deals and he picked it up there. I would judge it to be 85% with a ball burnished bore in excellent condition. He paid $1000 for it without a qualm. He has wanted one for his private collection for decades.

These would have been set up for DCRA/PRA competition. If their provenance could be traced to a member, the completion records are intact.

I've tried to get that provenance but the only provenance I can find is from the Lever Arms way bill from RCMP disposals depot for the rifles they received as surplus. My rifle is one of those listed on that "Purchaser's Copy" from Crown Assets.

Other than this I don't have any way to trace this particular rifle. There certainly aren't any DCRA markings anywhere on the rifle.

One of the rifles on BadgerDog's MKL site has a similar threaded hole in the same area.

It now leaves me wondering how many of these were set up with ball burnished barrels and target sights.

I remember the detachment in my small town had a No4 MkI* rifle when I was a kid. At that time they were everywhere and I was more interested in commercial offerings. I do however remember that the rifle they had looked to be completely without any modifications that were easily visible. We only had two members then and they both used the rifle to hunt with. Things were simpler then.

There aren't DCRA markings.
The hole drilled in the butt socket is to adapt the rifle for a PH5A sight, intended for the SMLE. Lots of PH5Cs, but I suppose if 5As were available, they got used.
There were No. 7 rifles drilled like that.

Thanks, tiriaq. What gets me is that I sold a PH5A sight about a year ago because I didn't think I would ever use it. The sights I've seen for sale online haven't been in decent condition or very extravagantly priced. Oh well, the rifle is correct the way it is. Would be nice to have the accessories. I haven't been able to find a pic of an MP No4 in match attire. Do they retain the issue front sights??

I have one with the parker hale and one unmolested in my safe.

I'd add more if the opportunity and money allowed.

They would have until the rules started to change. Maybe in the 70s.

You should nut up and pay that, I don't know if anyone else would.

last MP marked one I sold that was in the book and in not near as good a shape went for 1300$ 8- 10 years ago now to a gent here who was very very happy to have it.
16-1800 is not out of line from what I see listed here and elsewhere
6-800 $ guys are out of touch a bit I think. Ive collected LB stuff for a long long time aswell, and see them only continueing to rise in price
and just so you know I have " nutted up" and payed some high prices for some mint hard to find stuff
