The 7.92 conversions for possible Volkssturm use are described in Weaver's "Desperate Measures". The program was abandoned as not worthwhile, not because the conversions were unsafe. 6.5 Carcanos are the single most often issued Volkssturm rifles. The German 7.92 conversions are very rare.
