Well, I have certainly fallen hard for this cartridge...the .35 Whelen ;)

I am enjoying immensely reloading for and shooting the Remington 700 Classic that I bought awhile back. I recently had fun explaining about the "strange" cartridge to my hunting buddies as we were sighting in our rigs for the upcoming season. I look forward to demonstrating it's ability this fall in the field. ;)

So, I couldn't resist recently when another CGNut offered to trade me his like-new Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen for a handgun I was selling. :)

I should have it soon, and will enjoy shooting it alongside the other one at the range.

I'll post pics as soon as I get it into my hot little hands.

Jeff.

Once you get hooked, it's hard to shake that 35cal addiction.;)

Good luck this season and I look forward to seeing some pictures of successful hunts.

Cheers.

Thanks Boys...here are some pics of the rifle with and without a scope on it. Ain't she purty? :)

Ain't it the truth. My 35cal addiction began several decades ago - even before Remington discovered the 35Whelen.

Jeff - a great picture series of a very handsome shooter there. Is that a fixed 4x M8 on top? It looks like a perfect match.

You'll find the mag box is long but the ejection port shorter on that pump 35Whelen so it limits the COAL - not the mag length. I've owned several. So you usually have to set your COAL so that an unfired round can clear the port when ejecting. Some have ground the port longer I hear. Not me - so far.

Also those pumps can creep you out as many (most?) open the action involuntarily when fired - sometimes ejecting the empty too - auto like. When I was first shooting one it was winter and deep snow everywhere. I had trouble coraling my brass as it would chuck it time after time into the snow. A firm hold on the fore end pulling it back into your shoulder seems to minimize this effect. It's counter intuitive and I'm not sure why that seems to work to keep the action closed when firing.

Be interested in your findings Jeff.

Regards

Whelen B

Yes, Whelen B...good eye! It's a Leupold M8 4X fixed scope. I think it'll be a good match with this rifle.

Thanks for the detail on this rifle, I'll let you know how it works oout for me...and I won't be surprised if it "auto ejects" now. :D

Best wishes, Jeff.

A tale of two Whelens...

what have I started....?.........:)
nice rig....

Rick,

I was going to mention your name...;)

So here are some pics of both Whelens together...

And you notice the Classic has a nice, cushy Limbsaver on it - whilst the new 7600 does not...yet. If the classic is any indication, I'll want one in place, at least for bench work.

did ya have to post a pic?...now I really wish I'd kept that Classic Whelen...at least long enough to run a few rounds thru it....oh well, my 350 Mag will have to fill the 35 cal slot for now....but I do have a couple 35 cal tubes and an ADL '06 here....hmmmmmm

Jeff...that's gotta be what?...at least two months you've kept that Whelen...good going...:)

Rick,

You are most welcome to take it out for a test drive...let me know and I'll drop it off along with some of my super-duper-gruper 250 grain Speer / RL15 handloads. ;)

Yes, two months is a long time for me...this one might actually see a hunting season.

I have a similar Rem pump in 35W and a Mauser sporter. It is a very nice looking cartridge. Inspires confidence.

A friend also has the same rifle/caliber. When he sighted it in, it got 1" groups. That inspired me to get one too.

I have only shot one moose with 35 W. Aimed for the neck and shot went a bit high, severing the spine. He went straight down. Did not prove much. Any bullet would have had the same result.

Your scope is mounted much higher than I would mount that’s cope. Looks like a HIGH set of rings for a scope I would have mounted with the LOW rings. But neck length, cheek size, etc is different for each of us. Also, I suspect a rig for standing and sitting shots needs the scope positioned differently than a scope to be used prone.

I also have a 358 Win and a 35 Rem. Both of them are still virgins, though both have shot and missed. Not their fault.

One thing I have noticed about the Remingtom pump is that if a full mag is inserted when the bolt is closed, it may not latch properly. This means it later falls out. Best procedure is to insert mag with bolt open.

You WILL want a good recoil pad on your 7600. Don't let the "purists" who bad-mouth pump guns annoy you. Last fall a new Tikka and a Husqvarna bolt both had operating issues, but my Rem. pump didn't. Amazing how well these can shoot.

Yes, I figured I'd better look into one. ;)
