Anschutz 1761 22Long Rifle

Just purchased an Anschutz 1761 rifle in 22 long rifle. Shoots 1/4" groups at 50 yds. with Eley Match and Eley Pistol Auto. Problem is you have to jam the bullets into the rifling in barrel. About .096". Have second barrel with same problem. Federal Match is O.K. with 1/4" groups with flyers. No jamming required. Measure the bullet - Federal - .222" and Eley - 224".
Would appreciate any information. Thinking on rechambering but barrel chamber seems it have a taper.

Nov 3, 2022 - Problem solved - just reamed chamber - now bullet is easily chambered and extracted from barrel. Done this on my spare barrel - left original as from factory.

I have an Anschutz 1761 action, same issue with Eley Tenex and Sport, didn't try Eley Match though.
I just don't use Eley ammo anymore with this Anschutz.
At 50 meters, my Anschutz 1761 shoot 1/4" group with almost any ammo, such as SK Biathlon, SK Long Range...etc. So I don't just don't use Eley with it anymore.

I would happily use SK with those results.
 
Are you talking about bullet engraving? That is by design and normal with an Anschutz match barrel. My Anschutz 1907, and all the other guys at my club that I know who have Anschutz, require some oomph to push the round forward to then close the bolt. This presses the bullet into the lands slightly, i.e. engraves the bullet. With the bullet engraved and locked into the lands, when the firing pin strikes there is less wobble when that primer and powder ignite and accelerate the bullet.

IME..Forget the Eley!
 
Every Anschutz rifle must meet CIP specifications for characteristics such as chamber and bore dimensions. In fact all firearms made by manufacturers in CIP-member courntries, including CZ and Tikka, must conform to CIP specs.

With regard to chambers, CIP specs set the smallest dimensions that are allowed. It is likely that sporter models including repeaters will have slightly different chamber dimensions than single shot match rifles, with the length of the chamber being the greatest difference. Rifle models with shorter chambers (which must still be within CIP specs) may have difficulty chambering certain .22LR ammos.

Most North American mass produced firearms adhere to SAAMI regulations, which in .22LR provide for more generous chamber dimensions than CIP. While they will allow for all .22LR ammo to be used, including CCI Stingers with their extra long cases and CCI SV with their longer driving bands, SAAMI sporter chambers are often less desirable for shooters seeking the best accuracy performance.

With regard to shooting 1/4" groups at 50 yards, if anyone is doing that with any consistency, he should post. The "1/4 inch club" in the "1/2 inch challenge" thread has room for more company.
 
Sometimes the difficulty in chambering is rim thickness.
When a round has this degree of difficulty, it would be interesting to extract that round and see if the rifling is engraved into the bullet.
A Walther KKMS was such that when a round had to be extracted for a cease fire, the lead would be left in the rifling and with any luck the powder would not contaminate the loading ramp . . . even one grain of powder makes a mess.
A friend had an Anschutz re-barreled with a Eley Match chamber but with some headspace adjustment. That rifle was sufficiently tight it would not chamber Lapua.

I agree, Glenn - Not easy to do in the real world. My wife shot this a couple of hours ago with our 1761 - 50 meters outdoors, 32 degrees C, some variable wind about, 2 strips of surveyor's tape hanging off the target frame for "wind flags" & 4 lot numbers of SK Pistol Match Special. The 10 ring OD on this print is 12MM. Excluding the first cold, clean bore shot, she has 124 either inside or cutting the 10 ring.

Not a bad effort for a 70 year old IMO!
