Anschutz 1761 problems

only being able to tourq to 8"lbs is unexpected considering they say tourq to 2.5nm which is around 22"lbs.so you would figure that is what was done at factory, and if it was they would of not been able to open and close the bolt.did the wood shrink in our canadian weather, who knows.

As I said previously, I haven't seen a 1761. The 64 Anschutz rifles could experience a situation as you describe with your 1761 in which when the rear action screw was tightened beyond a certain point it interfered with the bolt. A solution to that problem was to reduce the length of the rear action screw. This would allow tightening the screw with more torque.

Allan harris that is exact setup i was looking at,I emailed greenlaw and he got back to me immediately, so I'm going to order the deluxe from bullseye and use until the top comes from greenlaw which is a few months.he seems to make a quality product.which centre rod did you use,the caldwell or order another from greenlaw.thwnks

I used the original Caldwell rod and simply bolted on the Greenlaw windage adjustable top. Dan is a class act and went out of his way to help me out even though I'm in Aus. He even chased up a couple of Protektor rear bags which I could not buy locally at the time.

Agreed on Dan. I had been looking for a top for my Caldwell and after reading this thread contacted him. My windage adjustable top ships from him Wednesday. A great guy indeed and excellent to deal with.

Out of curiosity, on another unrelated note to save sleeplessness, how about that rear screw length? Does it come into play on the 1761?

Do you mean if I torque it past 8"#,yes it interfered with the bolt travel,as for playing with the different torque measurement on rear action screw effects accuracy im not sure

This may cause you to wake-up i just posted a savage on the 22lr challenge and the tikka is next,oh my mistake you have sleeplessness lol.now if I get the anschutz figured out it will be there, but decided to wait for a different mag from tesro,I don't like the way it feeds, feels like I said pushing ribbed rebar across a pile of ribbed rebar. So you factor the cartridge getting ruffled up and the firearm moving with each loading im not getting half inch groups know how.

You don't comment on the screw length with regard to the inability to tighten the action screws sufficiently. Perhaps that means it's the right length and doesn't interfere in any way with the bolt raceway. I apologize if that suggestion was a waste of time.

Ok the screw length, will go measure.

1.74" is the length of the rear action screw,I have not grinded it down yet because I'm going to wait for a different mag to shoot it again.hopefully that is soon, summers are not long in manitoba and ranges were closed for a long covid while.

While you're waiting for a different magazine, you may wish to check something out.

On a 64 Anschutz, for example, if the rear screw was too long (perhaps because the dimensions of the stock changed with time), it would interfere with the bolt because it protruded into the bolt raceway when tightened.

See below for the 64 action receiver and the location of the rear action screw.

As I said, I haven't seen a 1761, but I've seen a few other Anschutz rifles. Is it possible for the rear action screw to interfere with the bolt by similarly protruding into the bolt raceway when tightened. If it's possible, perhaps shortening the action screw can ameliorate the problem.

This is exactly what is happening with the 1761, Glenn - Has been discussed by several owners of these rifles on various forums. When I received my metal trigger guard from Nordic, I had exactly the same issue. I could not set the screw torque on either TG to 2.5NM without first shortening the rear action screw. To preserve the originals, I simply went to my local bolt shop and bought some CSK metric torx head screws and modified them to fit the rifle perfectly.

Perhaps the OP should order a Lowey SSA - Hand feeding rounds will ensure those rounds enter the chamber without damage!

Ya, that's the only item that disappointed me a bit too.

Was yours aftermarket metal guard, or is it factory on the market.how does yours shoot, also is the feeding of the cartridge rough(meaning takes force to chamber.that might be the normal for anschutz compared to my savage and tikka.

I've been practicing on the 25bull USBR target. Shots staying within 1/2", so that's an 8 or better. Score wise, best was a 245/250. Shoots SK Flatnose Match and SK Long Range Match equally well as above. Going to try CenterX and Eley next.
No issues feeding, firing, nor extracting. There is a little pressure needed to chamber a round, but nothing out of the norm. Now, haven't checked, but the chamber might be a bit on the match size, which is ok. Will need to check for bullet engraving next time.
And the trigger guard is Anschutz. Without feeding any round, the bolt glides freely and smoothly. Hope some of this helps you out.
