Anschutz 64 MSR accuracy?

Had a great range day today with my new MSR :) With two bricks down the tube she has broken in nicely and is showing me her true colors. I don't care what anyone says new rifles need break in and proper cleaning after every use. Anschütz makes as fine a factory barrel as you could ask for but it is not hand-lapped and has plenty-o-tool marks to smooth out. Seeing is believing I know what the bore scope shows ;) So my girl is showing a preference for SK ammo now, go figure as I only have 2-3 boxes of Std + and Rifle match left! With that trend feeding it some higher end Lapua should be a treat. When I got to the Eley ammo fliers started popping up. I can't say for sure if that is just ammo pickyness, ammo quality or after 100 rounds she's fouled and needs a cleanin! Still many good groups shot with Eley and this is just the entry level stuff of Sport and Club. Also shuffled over to the metric range and shot some 60 M and 100 M groups in prep for next weeks Silhouette Match. Got the bullet drop figured out on the BDC scope and with 1.2-1.4" 100 M groups I can only blame myself for missing anything in the match! Lovin' the Anschütz!

The MS R can shoot, given enough practice. My groups are getting better, while still having room for improvement. These were shot this morning at 58 yards.

Anyone wondering about the accuracy of the MS R can be reassured that it's not bad.



 
So I finally received my MSR today! there was a bit of a mix up with the original shipment, and I was sent the wrong gun (an MPR), so the last 2 weeks were torture while I watched everyone with their new toys. It made it a bit easier, as because of the mix up, I was able to choose a gun with a piece of wood I liked, and here she is.



I don't have a permanent scope for it yet, and I had this Sightron sitting around, so on it went so I could get out and fire a few rounds. I fired 5 rounds to sight it in, and then fired the following 10 groups at 50m before the rain started coming down.



I'm a happy man! first group was top left, then down the left side, then shot the middle row. ammo was old SK std+ that I hadn't used previous as my other rifles like the newer batches more. I don't consider myself a very good shot, but maybe that's going to change. I see tons of potential in this gun.
 
With wood stocks swelling due to changes in humidity, pillar bedding solves some of that problem.
Regardless, once a setting has been arrived at, will it change with different ammo and does the testing process start over again.
When my CZ455 Varmint was pillar bedded, testing showed it did not like Eley Match grades (0.70 being the best at 50 yards) but Lapua CenterX was preferred (best being 0.26 at 50 and a 0.45 at 100).
There is another fly in the mix as I left the tuner on so the answer may rest in the possibility the tuner and CenterX were a match.
Next would be to run some tests without the tuner using Eley Match grades again.
Had the same treatment administered to the CZ455 American. Started out with the screws set at 30 inch pounds and alternating 5 ip increases front then back and finally saw 10 ring accuracy at 100 using the 100 yard BR target. Since this is a gopher gun, that accuracy was obtained using CCI MiniMags RN. Changing to other lot numbers and HP's, did not attain the same level of accuracy. Since there is only 150 rounds of that lot left will the process start over when that lot no longer exists?
I also tested some match grade ammo but remain convinced each brand and or lot will require starting over again at 30 or maybe even trying 25 but I don't know . . . yet.
 
I seem to get better results with using the minimum torque settings. My 455 liked it at 17 inch lbs. I have my anschutz set at 22.
Thanks again horseman as my 500 rounds of ultra match 22 from cabelas showed up today.
 
Back to the range on Thursday and tested savagecanuck's settings. Since 20 was the closest I could get to 17 that was where I started.
Since the rifle showed promise before pillar bedding with CenterX it was a good starting point. Torque was increased in 5 inch pound increments and at 35 a 1.311" group was shot.
At 40 ip well see for yourself . . .



The fingerprint is for identification purposes . . . yeah right!

At 45 ip the group opened up to 1.486, and when moved back to 40 I was back to 10 ring accuracy. Switched back to the CCI MiniMags at 40 ip and again saw 10 rings accuracy.
Of course the acronym SSDD will have to be tested . . . Same Shooter Different Day!

I'll be honest... I just bought it for the wood! lol..... I figured "It's Anschütz, chances are it'll shoot just fine and the wood is lovely." It looks pretty much ready to try some better ammo, I just can't shake this feeling that another brick of cheap ammo down the tube is still necessary before I go attempting the challenge. I only say this because my Lapua stash is so low I get one try and it's out. With my recent SK results I think it'll show a preference for good Lapua. Maybe I'll see what it does with some RWS Special Match and Eley Edge.

Went to my first Silhouette Match today, great fun! Got a 5 in a row on Turkeys with my MSR and 5 in a row on Rams in Hunter Class with my Weatherby XXII. Made AA rank in Standard and B in Hunter. Currently don't have a suitable rifle for Hunter Class as the Weatherby has severe vertical stringing issues, my Rem 597 is no longer fit for service until I get a new trigger group and possibly bolt, and I haven't gotten the call yet that my CZ 455/Lilja repairs and adjustment are complete. So my Hunter score was way lower at 21/60 compared to 34/60 with the MSR. Another match coming up in September and I think I'll be switching my range membership there for next year.

That looks like great fun, my range has nothing like that.I'd be all over that if they had something like that in Kelowna. I've done no special break in on my MPR and have already shot 2 challenge groups with it. I'm just waiting to try and get one that's all .2,s and 3,s. I think it is capable, me not sure!
 
Yeah it was awesome exactly what I've been wanting to do, and it is 10 minutes closer than my current range! I'm getting fed up with my range it's a zoo on the weekends, tons of morons coming in on guest passes. They removed the 20 yard line on one of the 50 yard ranges then put up baffles everywhere so you can no longer stand and shoot. Bench is boring once you've figured out your ammo, and their benches are in desperate need of refurbishment.

Just casually observing your targets my two cents is your MPR doesn't need as much "break in" as my MSR has needed. Those fliers you're occasionally seeing I'd say suggest a little more break in is needed. I bet after you've shot 500 rounds and give it a full clean you'll see some really good results from there on in. I'm not doing anything special just shooting a session of 300-400 rounds then cleaning 100% at home before I go out again. There were two successful challenge results in my last SK test, hard to see that because of the order I actually shot the groups. I'm also waiting to get a prime result before I post it, it'll come with the better ammo.
