Hi, just curious if anyone knows what type of ammo that Anschutz uses when they test fire a new rifle in their factory. On that test target that comes with the rifle.
Thanks George

I've had a number of new Anschutz rifles since 2015 and, while my memory is certainly not infallible, I don't recall Anschutz specifying on any test target what particular variety of ammo was used to achieve the results. According to information form Steve Boelter, former president of Anschutz North America, Anschutz currently tests with RWS. That makes sense for geographic reasons if nothing else because both Anschutz and RWS .22LR ammo are manufactured in Germany. Lapua would be another logical choice but Lapua's .22LR history in Germany is much more recent.

What variety of RWS is not entirely clear as the images from Anschutz test tunnels below suggest.

It appears that some testing is done with RWS Club. Other ammos seen include Eley Tenex (red box in first and third photos) and Lapua (CX or Midas+?).

Below is the American Matt Emmons who competed in the 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics. He must have received special dispensation to test his rifle himself. He's using Tenex, but that is likely a personal choice.

I recall grauhanen had located a pic of Anschütz's testing tunnel. There were piles of empty RWS Target Rifle boxes, implying that was their preferred ammo for testing. In the corner of the photo, some gold boxed RWS could be spotted, it was not clear whether it was Special Match or R-50. Eley Tenex could also be seen. I would suspect that if a passing target wasn't shot with RWS Target Rifle, they would then try some of the other varieties before determining a fail. It would not be economical to use the highest grade of ammo for mass testing.

*edit* haha, there it is above, posted while I was typing. RWS Club, I see, not Target Rifle.

If I may add to what's been said, Anschutz appears to test with Lapua Polar Biathlon ammo when testing at least some biathlon rifles. Anschutz has special means of testing biathlon actions in - 20 C temperatures. It doesn't look like the biathlon action shown below is in the cold set up.

While RWS may be the usual ammo for testing Anschutz barreled actions, it seems that Anschutz uses a variety of ammos from time to time. Below on the table are four bricks of what may be RWS R50, a box of Eley Tenex, and a box of Lapua X-Act. There's what appears to be a biathlon rifle on the table as well as an unknown handgun.
