Hey guys,

Im really thinking of picking up a 1517 17 hmr in either a 14" or 18" barrel from Prophet River but the test targets on the ones he has look pretty poor in comparison to the 23" bbls. Its weird cause some targets look like they've been shot more then 5x and other only have 3. Does anyone know at what distance they test the 17 hmr's at? Pretty hard to hand tune a load so is that what one can expect??
Im sure you rimfire gurus can help me out.

Cheers!!

I've got two Anschutz 17's and I've had no problem shooting way smaller groups than the test targets. Rumor is they use CCI TNT ammo, and it isn't match grade. In my testing TNT was the worst in my 1727, with Hornady 20gr XTP shooting twice as small for an average, around .3" for three, 5 shot groups. My 1517MPR is a drill as well. The test targets are shot at 50M.

Testing for function same as cz. None of my cz targets are all that spectacular but upon shooting them they shoot much much better then the test target showed.

Check that the mag feeds reliably.

Mag function test could be done with cycling rounds without firing a shot and a test target is no indication of mag function.

Typically the test target is to show a standard that the manufacturer has set and the product meets or exceeds that standard. That is why with Anschutz the test standards vary relative to the product. Test criteria is different for example the sporter rifles , entry level target guns ,and top flight match rifles will have different test standards. The standards are a representation of the firearm performance.

Whatever brand etc. of ammo that is used on test targets for a .17hmr, none of it is match ammo. There is no match ammo for the .17hmr, is there?

In any case, the test target does not give a true indication of how the rifle will shoot.

Yes the test targets are to confirm "function".....and the function that they are confirming is the ability of the rifle to place the first and subsequent shots in a similar location on a target!!

My Anschutz 1717 came with a test target shot at 100 meters. It was ten rounds into one ragged hole. I have never seen any test target for any rifle that was better than this one. I will try to find it and post it here. This rifle is the most accurate rifle of any of the many guns (any caliber) I own and is always in demand when we have our annual staff shoot. For those who don't know the model, it is a standard barrel 17 HMR. Phil.
