This could be any antiques like Shotguns or Rifles.
This is a HYPOTHETICAL WHAT IF I WAS ATTACKED THREAD NOT A HUNTING BEARS THREAD as far as any antique handguns go!
also Handguns for the guys who might have one, must be a pre 1898 gun tho.
This applies to Cougars as well as bears.
Thos that wish to say theres NO antique handguns that could kill a bear.
Heres a picture of my 50 70 Rem rolling block pistol. :D
This gun would kill near anything and is deadly accurate.

Old timers used to kill griz with a 44 Percussion pistol by sitting in a tree with a bait below and the Griz comes up POW right thru the top of the skull!

I think my Martini Rifle in 45 70 would be another good choice.
Also the WG i have that happens to chambers a 45 colt is a decent gun to!
Full BP loaded 45 colts are a pretty powerfull load.

The question is not what will kill a bear in an absolute sense because one of the largest grizzlies on record was killed with a .22. I suspect very few people would recommend carrying a .22 of any kind as bear defense. The real question is what is required to stop a charging bear quickly with one or two shots, not necessarily in the perfect spot.
In the Alaska study I mentioned, the recommendation was actually not the most powerful rifle because more often than not, the person carrying it was as afraid of the gun as they were of the bear and tended to flinch very badly. Also the case of the charging grizzly with a .38 also points out the need for frequent practice, particularly with a handgun. That particular bear was killed with the last shot in the gun at 5 or 6 feet and was only hit with one bullet. The shooter did not particularly like guns and had not shot it in 2 years.

my .50cal hawkin flinter with a maxi ball or .410 GP flat nose with 80gr of FFFg pyrodex behind it when i go to rural camp site's.

but my No.1 MK3 is never out of arm's reach if i'm camping way back in the bush....
 
are antique bears worth more than modern bears?
Why bother with a pistol when a shotgun loaded with slugs or dare I say it Buckshot is more effective. Also i think bear defense is over rated leave the bears alone and chances are the bears won't bother you.
 
Yes i agree a Handgun is only as good as the guy holding it.
But power does play a big role to.
Also im talking mainly Blacks not Griz. Id have my 870 or 45 70 with me in Griz country.
Tho i bet that Rolling block pistol would do some major damage to any bear.
Also if your on a horse and it spooks throws ya off and runs off with your Rifle at least a Revolver or pistol is gona be on you, or should be!
Also around camp who wants to be constantly packing a Shotgun or rifle around.

I can imagine a 50 caliber Rd ball with 80 grs of BP would do some major damage.

Dont forget people hunted and defended against Bears in the 1800s and earlier to eh!

With antique bears you can just walk up and push them over!

Much as I feel safe around bears on the island, I think there is a person killed about every 1 1/2 years by a bear, in BC. There are several others attacked or threatened during that time.
Muzzle loaders killed a lot of bears in yesteryear but they also carried a whopping big bowie for when the first shot did not work.

This, I pack it when I'm walking in the bush.
It has a foot long blade that will cut you if you look at it wrong.
I just finished it.

i think a large webley would be my choice i just don't think a 32 RF would do it i would want a 455 in a long barrel some 38's may work

Yes I am a Bladesmith, but I do it for fun and I don't make very many.
I think I made 5 knives one year, but that would be it.
This was the first Damascus I've made in over 10 years, and I figured I'd better get at it again or risk losing the skill.
Well it was like riding a bike, it all came back to me.
I've bought a brand new anvil and I'm going to buy a new Striker air hammer soon, so I'll definitely be making another batch of Damascus with the new air hammer.
I make my steel differently than most smiths, I quadruple stack it rather than double it.
This means less welding and heating and it should reduce the amount of carbon migration as well.
It also allows me to grind every bit of scale off of the bars before restacking and welding so there are going to be no unsightly smudges in the blades.
I figure if I'm going to go though the trouble of making the stuff I may as well make it as good as I possibly can and cut no corners.

Actually that blade is fairly light because of the full convex grind and the fact that the blade tapers from the ricasso to the tip.
It's quick as Hell.

well i like the whole knife but i really like your choice of the handle.

And i carry a big Slitter too as when all else fails a good knife can save your butt !

i dont use round ball for anything but range time.... i prefer the maxi ball conical and the heavy great plain's stuff .410gr and bigger.... a .410gr GP flat nose will send a yote tumbling arse over tea kettle at 100yrd's and leave a hole the size of a tennis ball.... a maxi will pass thru and fold small game like they where hit by a truck.... my guess is i would have better then a 50% chance of living thru a bear encounter within 50yrd's.... maxi ball retains most of it's energy and shape and i have yet to recover a GP conical in less then 3 piece's from anything i have shot it into.... i think the GP will be my choice for dear season.... that or plain old round ball just because it shoot's so nice out of my hawkin.

as for a big ass bowie knife? i dont own one but i do own an old husky 2100 with a 32" bar on it and i know for a FACT when you stare down a blackie with it running or not the thought of tearing off a strip of your man bacon become's secondairy.... there not "that" dumb or hungry.
