What would happen if I put an Antiqe nickle plated revolver in a chemical rust dissolver bath? The bore is chunky and I want to clean it up?Dave

Scrubbing the bore wouldn't do the job?
You could plug the barrel and fill it with Evaporust or similar. No need to immerse the whole thing.

Agreed. I would think twice about a complete immerse. There are a multitude of things that could go wrong with that practice. Could effect or lift the exterior finish, just for starters.

A good cleaning with Hoppes #9 and a brush for starters. Keep brushing and patching with oil until the patches come out clean. Once you've done that you'll be able to fully assess how bad the bore is or is not. Butch's Bore Paste is a mild abrasive used to clean and polish. I've seen those old pistols, which don't often have deep rifling to begin with, cleaned and polished to the point that they've become smooth bore with no evidence of rifling left at all.

Find some brass ''screen'' material. You may have to order it online.

Wrap it around a worn bore brush, until it fits snugly in the bore and run it through a few times.

When I used this method, I soak the bore in liquid detergent overnight by plugging one end and filling the bore.

This really softens up the ''crud'' you're talking about and a few passes with this ''screen brush'' will get rid of most of it, to the point it's easily removable with regular cleaning tools.

You say the ''crud'' is rust.

Are you sure it's rust?

It might be lead fouling that has rusted underneath over time.

Some nations used to issue ''metal screen patches'' to their troops to clean the rust and other bits out of the rifle bores when they went a long time between regular cleaning.
