Hi,

Is anyone aware of a digital database that could be used to create parts for obsolete antiques? A search of mine has turned up no results. I think there is a need for a CAD file database of part breakdowns to machine new parts to original specs, when all else fails. With massive libraries of information online, it seems such a library should be made freely available to the public.

It would be handy to download a file for that weird missing screw, or hammer or lockup lever, or even a cylinder, take and download the file, send it off to your local machine shop, in accordance with all local laws, and repair that 200 year old antique properly.

Yes, you can spend a day making your own little part, and I have done that when I had to, But if a few parts are missing, on a obscure model, it becomes a time consuming project. And I like stuff to work, even for display purposes. In a day when you can 3d print almost anything, why can't we repair old stuff properly. Does a online repair database already exist that I am unaware of?

I know a few antiques are still supported, and others you find are usually cannibalized parts. And I have had some success finding some parts crossovers from modern models in the states.

If a digital parts database does not exist, do you think enough enthusiasm for antiques exists to get owners to properly scan or document good examples and create such a database? I know I would pay for parts information. Might be a worthwhile business if someone could monetize the files, and pay royalties to the website and people that uploaded the scanned parts from working models. I know I would pay just for the information specs on a few parts if I needed them to fix a 200 year old project.

I know there is a tremendous amount of experience on this forum, what are your thoughts?

I think its a great idea. But what are the laws on having 3d plans for gun parts these days? I think its all BS, but still, is it even legal to have plans for any gun parts on your computer? I thought the libs made any plans that could be 3d printed illegal,..

It was very vaguely covered by the party in C-21 with 2 different laws but none of "our representatives" brought it up kinda glossed over and for gotten. The wording is so vague that it can be almost all encompassing in Canada I now hear the certain US states are pushing so all 3D printers CNC and similar machines have to be hooked up to a government data base and can only print "government" approved prints.
