Can someone please translate the governement mumbo-jumbo into english. I am wondering about what is and what isn't an antique handgun under canadian law. Are there any exceptions? I am trying to get into cowboy action without a restricted PAL. Also my great grandfathers service revolvers were sold many years ago and I would like to aquire something similar.

OK. To qualify as an antique, the pistol must have been made prior to 1898, and:
be muzzle loading, including c&b revolvers, or
if rimfire must be other than .22, or
if centrefire, must be in a calibre other than those on a list which includes .32-20, .32 Colt or S&W, .38 S&W, .38 Colt, .38-40, .44-40, .45 Colt. There may be others, I'm working from memory.
So, a pre '98 Colt single action can be antique, restricted or prohibited, depending on barrel length and calibre.

My take on that is that if made prior to Jan 1, 1898 and not one of the following calibres:

22 LR/L/SR
32 Short Colt
32 Long Colt
32 Smith and Wesson
32 Smith and Wesson Long
32-20 Winchester
38 Smith and Wesson
38 Short Colt
38 Long Colt
38-40 Winchester
44-40 Winchester
45 Colt

than it's an antique piece.

44-40 is the same as 44 win, so I really don't know if a gun engraved 44 win would qualify, probably no and that sucks.
