I'm looking for a front sight for a S&W DA 44 Russian Revolver. Sometime in the past, someone filed down the front sight on mine, so it shoots 2 ft high at 25 yards. I'd like to replace this filed front sight with an original, of the correct height. Anyone know where I might locate said part?

Or, how difficult would it be for a gunsmith to add metal, then re-silver the sight?

Thanks.

Lee Enfield,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that is approximately 2' above POA. With the front sight burried in the rear, I'm still not even close to POA.

Would the sights be set @ 18" below the bull from factory, or would this be a later alteration?

I would *like* the sights to be on, or close to it @ 25 yrds since I don't shoot IIRC targets. How dificult would it be for a smith to add some metal?

Is the sight removable ? I can weld metal on a sight if that would help.I'm in Port Alberni.
Cheers nessy.

The early ones are removable, the later ones are forged integrally.

A lot of people have used silver dimes to build front sights.

Of course I may have that backwards....

The front sights are pinned and once the pin is removed with a punch (Carefully) the site should just pop out then ya can make a new one from a silver dime or a real Nickle nickle ;)
Make it as high or higher than ya want and file it down.
I have seen a large varity of sight blades in these S&WDA 44 Russian guns some almost flat some like a sail on a boat.

Any gunsmith should be able to change the front site if ya dont want to do it your self.
Theres a guy on CGN from Victoria whos aparently very good he goes by Something Tech:confused:
Ask at the Gunsmithing Section im sure he will pop up!

Gents,

Thanks for the info. It's just what I was after.

Nessy, thanks for the offer to weld the sight. I think I'll try my hand at making one from a silver dime or nickle first. My revolver goes have pins holding the sight in place so getting the old one out shoudn't be too difficult.
