Antique revolver

Slightly off topic, apologies for that, but what shell plate are you using to load 38 S&W in your dillon? I have a buddy that has an old revolver in .38 S&W, and he asked me if I could load for it with my 650, but I wasn't able to find out what shell plate would work.

38 s&w is essentially a shorter 38 special case and I think rim size is very similar.

I read that the .38/.357 shell plates won't work for that reason. I never had a .38 S&W case to try though, to be fair.

Got 25 pc’s you can have for shipping cost, I don’t have anything chambered in that cartridge. Can throw them in the wet tumbler for you as I’m in the middle of cleaning a ton of 9mm, PM if interested.

Ooooh maybe it was the base diameter. Just checking out the specs, and 38 S&W rim is thinner which wouldn't be much of an issue, but the base diameter is quite a bit wider (.3865" vs .379). So the .38/.357 shell plate would have to be opened up to accommodate the S&W. Which I'm not really interested in doing.

Sorry for derailing the post a bit Ganderite, but hopefully you got what you needed for your original question already?

The difference in base diameter didn't occur to me.

It might depend on the press manufacturer as to whether or not 38 S&W can be reloaded using 38Sp/357Mag shellplates. Lee, for one, lists the same shellplate for both those calibres (#1 plate). Mind you, my Lee uses the same shellplate (#19) for both 9mm and 40S&W, so the Lee plates might have more play in them than other manufacturers.

OK. So an antique does not have to be locked up.

Can it be loaded and in my desk drawer, while I am watching for a racoon?

Nope.

Antique Firearms

14 (1) An individual may store, display or transport an antique firearm only if it is unloaded.

Edit: Weird. You must have edited your post right as I posted. Loaded in your night stand, no. Watching for a raccoon could be argued that it's "in use" for pest management, buuut it being in a desk drawer suggests storage rather than in use. So still probably no. But maybe yes. An expensive lawyer would be able to figure that one out for you in front of a judge, lol.

You can hunt small game in Ontario with an Antique Handgun. I have that in writing from the MNR.
I can give you a copy of that tomorrow if you are at the club.

Thank you. That is exactly the info I was looking for.
