im thinking of restoring a 1865 spencer, biggest issue is the bore / barrel is toast.

is it possible to re barrel such a gun ( keeping it as much as possible in original caliber and looks. ( 50-70)

is the barrel thread something simple or unusual ?

any comments or instructive info most welcomed.

Perhaps it could be re-lined retaining all the original markings? Rim fire ? Caliber doesn't sound right?

Conversions to use shortened .50-70 cases are done by installing a centerfire breech block.
No idea if anyone in Canada is installing liners in barrels like this. Don't know where in Canada you could buy a .50 liner.
This would not be inexpensive.
Spencers have been escalating in value, like many other collectibles. Not sure what you mean by "restoration". You don't want to do any restoration that is going to reduce the value and appeal of an antique.

thanks for your comments tiriaq, ive been looking for a project and a spencer caught my eye. example, theres also one on the EE / antique gun section in tough shape. im looking for something that can be brought back to shooting condition.

of course my approach would be do as little harm as possible ( thus the re-lining question ) there are a couple usa smiths who do such work, and am looking into there costs. OR maybe a barrel blank an re barrel the action ? im not altering a working / firing gun but hoping to bring a wall hanger back from the edge is my idea.

i would have a centre fire block fitted , i see 3 shops state side sell those.
