Antique Status firearms converted to shoot modern ammunition

We are not the problem I'm sick of these people wasting our tax money and everyones time attacking our way of life.

Open your eyes and go after the gang bangers for christ sake, what the hell is wrong with this world.

Apparently in Canada, its only ok to have freedoms when we don't use them too much, f**king bulls**t.

Easy targets and it makes good drama to keep the sheep riled up. "Think of the Childrens!":runaway:

Easier by a long shot, than getting out from behind the nice desk and dealing with the actual problem.

Gotta be seen as 'doing something', even if it has nothing to do with the root cause of the problem.

In this case, the 'problem' isn't going to go away (Jane & Finch, et al), so, to be seen 'doing something', they hit the easy pickings.

Cheers
Trev

Just picked up a Webley mark 1 from the post office, shipper marked it as 45 ACP Webley mark 1, customs didn't blink an eye (opened and inspected), so what's the deal here exactly?

IF YOU NEED info on antiques and antique status talk directly to the Techs they are the only ones de-registering antique firearms they are in Ottawa 1 800 731 4000 ext.1090 . the other people really don't no

Correct. It appears that somethings going on with the CFO or CFC though in an attempt to tighten things up on us. Epps refused to rebarrel a pre 1898 Colt to 38/357 for me last week telling me that they had been told they could no longer re-chamber antiques in these calibers....

Correct, they are going to require legal antiques be chambered in their original chambering. Where this cannot be determined, it would have to be a period correct, non-modern chambering. Things are about to get messy for all the guys with SAA's and Webleys in a more modern chambering. Not sure if they'll do it the easy way by expanding the no-go list, or the hard way by hardlining that the chambering must be original. Sad part is we brought this upon ourselves, too many people started building .38 Special SAA's and that was what brought on the heat. The .45 ACP'd Webleys were tolerated, but they're all about to get the ax looks like.

Do you know this for sure? It's possible Epps was just covering their ass by say the CFC wouldn't let them do it. However I would not be surprised if the laws change.

I talk to the tecs at CFC all the time no changes that they know about are comeing.
45 acped webleys and 44 sp saas are still being lettered as antiques and will continue to be.

That's my experience as well. Most gunshops and gunsmiths are not well versed in the antique laws. They don't want the perceived hassle and they don't want to get into trouble so they will blow you off with BS.

So the sky isnt falling. Carry on.

LOL No its all clear sailing im sure. Look even if they pull some crap like that guys with 45 Acp Webleys can pay the $150 to get there cylinders done back to 455
Also any SAAs out there can be set back up in 44 Russian or 41 lC or any of the antique calibers so easy.
Thats why i dont worry to much.

As far as gun shops not wanting to do the conversions i think thats just to cover there own arses. Cant say i blame them either.

The .45AR case is basically a .45ACP case with a very thick rim, so the clips did not have to be used. Factory ammunition is not the same load as .45ACP.

As far as changes to the "deemed antique" definition in the regulations is concerned, an OIC would be required. This would require government action. Likely? Who knows? I suppose that a case could be made that conversion of antiques to accept more modern - off the list - calibers is contrary to the intent and spirit of the law. Misuse of antique handguns is exceedingly rare, there would be no real justification to change the definition. Of course, many of the rules and regulations exist for other than good reasons.

I don't know anything about 45 ACP, it's 45 AR, right?

Load 45 acp with moon or half moon clips, 45 auto rim one at a time out of the box. Neither will fit and shoot in an unaltered 455 chamber.
A Webley MkI was the first altered revolver to be designated antique, and it was done by the CFO of that time in Surrey BC, not by the RCMP in Ottawa.

I think however that when we are talking about reclassifying a gun with an existing registration, the RCMP are not bound by the law. Since they are the ones who do the reclassification, they need only say "it is policy" It would take many thousands of dollars with dubious chances of success to have the courts overturn any given case. In part dubious because courts tend to take the approach that the police can do no wrong.

If you had a pre 1898 gun which was unregistered for some reason (presumed antique or presumed disabled etc) and rebarreled it or rechambered it so that it no conformed to the law as an antique, we are now talking about being incorrectly prosecuted successfully for possessing an unregistered modern gun and I think the odds of a successful defense would be fairly good.

I have a restricted to antique colt conversion underway right now so we'll see what happens. Regardless of policy, the firearms act is very clear about what constitutes an antique. The fact that this is the second of a matched pair being done and I just recently got the letter for the first one I'm going to hope all goes easily...

There is a big gray area, I think I better keep my CBSA customs receipts which says that the box for the Webley Mark 1 45 ACP was opened and deemed antique.

Pretty hard to change the law when they've issued antique letters for all of these things....

Its not just the letters its all the handguns the Restricteds and Prohibs that the RCMP has Deregistered.
So now them guns can be anywhere thousands have been deregistered.
So they wont look like the sharpest pencils in the box wanting to do something about this now after what 10 years or more of getting handguns off the books.
Whats that old saying about the barn burning and the donkeys all running about :p

This thread sounds like rumours gone wild with little or no hard facts/first hand info. Are we trying to give them ideas? Are we trying to suggest what we think they can get away with?

All threads on conversions, concealed carry etc should be banned.
We as responsible collectors should not be giving idiots on either side any ideas!
