So I was successful in getting an anterless deer tag for the upcoming season, does this entitle me to shoot either a deer with antlers or one without? I know I only get to take 1, that was how it was explained to me, if you poses an antlerless tag you can take either or, is this correct?

Yes, you are correct. You can only take one, and you are lucky to have a choice of which one to take.

Good luck........

Im assuming validation is for a general whitetail area and not for a controlled hunt area?(is it southern ontario or up in cottage country?)

If its a controlled hunt area that tag is good for buck or doe archery hunting only in that area.

If its a genreal area(not a controlled hunt area) its good for buck or doe in either archery or gun season.

If in a general area and hunting in a camp of other hunters.. Discuss within the group what tags everyone has. You can shoot a buck and have someone else with a "buck only" tag put their tag on it. And someone else can shoot a doe and tag it with your tag. If hunting with a group,, you do not have to stop hunting when you fill your tag. You are legally allowed too hunt, until every tag in camp is filled. Party hunting is legal in ontario and widely accepted.

Different rules for different provinces.

You can't take either, it has to be a deer that fits the definition of anterless. Here in Manitoba, an anterless deer includes deer with small spikes (certain # of inches). Check your regs for the specifics.

saskcop and Grizzlypeg,, im sorry but you do not understand the rules for Ontario. He is legally allowed to kill any whitetail in that wmu if it is a general whitetail area.

Copied directly from the reg's

Any resident of Ontario who has a valid hunting version
Outdoors Card may apply to the draw for an antlerless
deer validation tag. Hunters who receive a validation tag in
the draw are permitted to harvest their choice of EITHER
an antlerless deer in the WMU specified on the tag OR an
antlered deer anywhere in the province during the open
season – with the exception of during a controlled hunt.
See page 69 for information on hunting during a
controlled deer hunt season

Sorry champ, but in Ontario, with an antlerless tag (zone specific), you can take an antlerless deer in the zone specified on the tag, or a buck anywhere in the province.

Yes that was my understanding and I have a tag for 77 north of Barrie, that I was allowed my choice as I have an aterlerless tag

Sounds like I'm as wrong as wrong can be. What a weird name for it, "anterless deer tag". Makes it sound like its for harvesting, an anterless deer. That's the way it is here in Manitoba with the 2nd deer tag. They specify that you can only take an anterless deer, meaning one with no antlers, or only a short spike (forgot the inches they specify).

In ontario, its not an antlerless tag...it is a deer tag, same color as every other deer tag sold, the only difference is there is some writing on it that says valid for an antlerless deer in WMU **.

For the general deer season, you buy a tag for a buck. You then apply for a validation sticker which goes on your tag and allows you to harvest any deer you want in the WMU you applied for. "Antlerless tag" is a slang term, and not a very appropriate one IMO. But its the common lingo so thats how it goes.

Sounds like an Ontario regulation to me: "Antlerless" means with or without antlers. I wonder if "deer" means " or a bear". :)

The only reliably correct advice for questions about hunting regulations is "Go check the hunting regulations."

No, whats wrong is the term he used. Its slang used by those who know what they are talking about.

From the regulations summary

http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@fw/documents/document/239849.pdf
An antlerless deer is defined as a deer that has no antlers, or
has antlers that are less than 7.5 cm (3 inches) in length.

The antlerless deer validation tag program is used to limit
the number of antlerless tags allocated, which controls the
number of antlerless deer harvested. If deer populations are
low, then the number of antlerless tags offered will be low,
to allow the herd to rebuild. As deer numbers increase, the
number of antlerless tags offered will increase to control
the growth of the herd.

The antlerless deer validation tag
program allows any legally licensed hunter to harvest an
antlered deer, but an antlerless deer can be harvested only
if the hunter or hunting party holds an antlerless deer
validation tag.

Sounds complex to me. :D

Here is Saskatchewan they keep it simple for us with limited reading skills. The tag says antlerless and that is exactly what it means.

Very confusing once you get the either ### tag.;)

You could always live in Quebec and get more complex. I won a "1st Killing Antlerless Deer Hunting Licence."

It means I must first harvest a doe, then I can harvest a buck. If you take a buck first, you are no longer eligible to harvest a doe.

And here an antlerless deer is either a female, or a male with antlers smaller than 7cm.
