Hi all. I am new to the site but I have a question and hopefully I'm in the right place. I am currently looking at purchasing a .22lr AR style non-restricted rifle. I have come across some reviews online and a lot of people, particularly Americans rave about the Ruger SR22r (rifle). I have seen many reviews on the S&W M&P 15-22 but I have also found out that those are restricted here.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any other manufacturers of .22lr AR style non-restricted rifles in Canada besides Ruger? Also if anyone has any experiences with the Ruger SR22r please share as I am looking into reviews on them as well. Thank you.

There are a few offerings for NR AR style .22s

10/22 in a aftermarket stock (can look AR or G36ish)
Sr22 - factory tactical 10/22
Mossberg 715t - very cheap toy, not really like am AR but if it works for you great.
M1600. - retro looking m16 thing.
Remington VTR 597

My recommendation is go for the 10/22 or the Sr22. They might cost more but they are a good rifle.

Or buy an AR with a .22 conversion. But then it is restricted.

I think Daver_II has provided a very good summary. All I would add is that the best quality, aluminum, 10/22 AR style stock/chassis systems are the Troy ($300ish with built in folding troy sights) and the Nordic (basically identical to an SR-22, but you can add your own AR stock, pistol grip and fore end)

If you are interested in customized SR-22/Nordic rifles there are lots in this thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/976074-SR22-Rifle-Questions

This question gets asked alot. If you bring up the rimfire forum and click on search. Type in AR 22.
There is a company is alberta that makes an AR type 22 that takes 10/22 mags. It matches the feel/weight of an AR.
The SR is an overpriced 10/22.
As stated you can buy a normal 10/22 and put it in an AR stock. Tactical Innovations has a receiver that has an AR style charging handle. This is what I have. ATI makes and AR stock. However you have to take it all apart if you want to clean everything.
There isnt a 22 that matches the AR upper/lower style without it being restricted. I also have the m&p 15-22 and its lightyears above the ruger!
If your near Calgary, anyone is welcome to try the two!
Fyi, most people who do the 10/22/sr22 route end up spending over 1k on their guns, not including optics!
If you build from scratch it will be around $700
The only other rifle I can think of is the SU 22, which I have also.
It has an upper/lower but doesnt match an AR. It also fold for easy storage and is NR. It takes AR style 22 mags and the largest drum for it is 275 rounds which I had and sold. Was great but heavy. The su also has a pistol grip stock which is aftermarket. Works really well if you can find one.
Hope this helps.

If you dont believe me on price, chech out the EE. There are tons of AR moded 10/22, sr22s for sale.
Atleast you can see what people have done and what they are asking for a used 22!

Thank you everyone for your replies. I'll look into the options you have all suggested.

I was just at Grouse River an hour ago and they have the ATI AR-22 stock on sale for $165

not all of us want restricted guns. I have no use for any restricted rifle and wouldnt want to be told where and when I could use it. no thanx.

its not a matter of convenience its my personal preference. id love to have an AR but I hate the fact that it has to be registered and I can only shoot it at the range. I like shooting in the bush.

That is a fair point, but think about it for a second, if every gun owner in convinced themselves a little bit and owned an AR, then 2 million gun owners would be on the same page...

With two million voters all interested in getting rid of restricted class, perhaps we would all be allowed to shoot whatever we want wherever we want.

oh I agree 100% and I fully support all efforts. and when that day comes ill be glad to sell my NR XCR in favor for a $700 AR that is on the same/better playing field. I was just talking about this screwed up sitiuation with my local gun store owner about how I can buy a XCR/SU16/tavor ect thats NR and put them side by side to any AR, not many people can tell the difference!!! He gave me the info needed to contact the appropriate MP.

This pretty much sums it all up...

no idea, I didnt even try, like I said owning restricted firearms doesnt turn my crank.

I have an acreage. It would be nice to be able to shoot AR type rifles on my land.
I know a gun is a gun is a gun.
However everyone calls me a fudd because I see a difference in a rifle and a pistol. Simple fact a pistol is easier to conseal than a 26" rifle.
However I do concede anyone who is going to break the law and use a firearm is going to use whatever they can get their hands on.
So having the classes just makes things more difficult for gun owners who fallow the law.
Back on the OP topic. The 15-22 is simply awesome if you dont want to convert a normal AR.

It's turning my crank, less and less every day. Thought the "gun friendly" majority gov't would do something, but no such luck.
I'm downsizing my resticteds/prohibs, and getting more into blackpowder and milsurp non-resticteds.
Did they win? F^ckin' right. At least with me they did!

I am sorry if I offend, and to each their own, but to me anyone that only gets a NR licence instead of a "full" PAL is accepting firearm regulation willingly. Firearm regulation is designed to be a pain in the ass so I endeavour to own as many guns as I can. Stand up and be counted.

It's not like an Rpal is any more difficult to get, And it doesn't cost much more.

To me not getting it says "I don't care about firearm regulation or the firearm community in Canada, I have what I need and that is good enough"
