Just trying to help a buddy out. I'm not sure where he had them stowed, but sweet whistling J***s, what a mess! First time I ever saw rust on a stainless gun! Last time I took on a project like this, it was a neighbour's Model 10 that had been in the bottom of a trunk since he'd gone to plain clothes about 15 years before!

Target number one is a blued Ruger 22/45. Outside, doesn't look too bad on the receiver/barrel...couple of spots of surface rust that some Rust Preventative 2 and abrasive pad should take off with minimal damage. However, the take down latch assembly looks like it spent a year at the bottom of an ocean cove - got that soaking up some oil in the hope of being able to get it out of the frame. I finally got the mag out by prying it out from the bottom with a screwdriver until I could get ahold of it...mag must have had a good 1/16 covering on both sides.

Assuming I can finally get this thing apart to clean it up/check the functioning, anyone have any tips or tricks for cleaning/removing rust and/or getting something this bad apart?

I figured I'd just chuck it in a bucket of motor oil for a couple of days to see if things loosened up, but if anyone else has any ideas that have worked for them, I'm all ears.

I would soak them in breakfree CLP for a day, then the rust will just about be gone, then use the finest steel wool you can get and attack the rest.....

I doubt if plain motor oil is going to help you as it has no solvents in it, you would be better off spraying the gun down with liquid wrench and keep soaking it down as needed (not sure if liquid wrench is safe for plastic....)

or just soak down in CLP and keep soaking it as it dries up.....

make sure to buy some isopropyl, a can of brake enviro friendly brake cleaner and some cold blue (44/40 isone of the best)......

after steel wool and everything is cleaned up degrease with brake cleaner, then soak and wipe down with the alcohol as final degreaser and then cold blue... follow directions,

First, use some kind of a solvent/cleaner such as CLP. That should get rid of the rust itself not of the pitting left by it. If the pitting is not too severe, you can use Flitz or a similar metal polish to remove it.

CLR will work. I used it to get rust out of some driveway pavers and it took it all out. I understand that coca cola actually will remove rust too!
