I just passed my PAL and RPAL courses last weekend, and I’m trying to find a good left hand Hunting rifle, as well as a good scope.

I will be hunting primarily Moose with this rifle, and making shots under 200yards. I am just getting into hunting, and probably only have 1 rifle for hunting (I am more of a paper puncher) so I need a good all round cartridge, I’m looking at .30-06sprng or .308win. Any advice?

I have been doing some research on forums, and sites as to which rifles I would like and average prices. I have around $1200 to spend (scope included) so I’m a little limited and also with left hand models costing more. Two rifles I’m really interested in are Savage “weather warrior” 116FLHSS lefthand or the Tikka t3 lite lefthand. Both are great guns, but the Savage is more in my price range and I’ve heard great things about their accustock and accutrigger. I would like synthetic stock and stainless barrels as I like the look and they are a bit more durable.

For scopes I really like what Leupold offers, but they are a bit pricey, I was looking at VXII 3-9 40mm (VXIII would be great, but out of my price range).
Is there any other scopes that are comparable to Leupold but a lot easier on the wallet? I would want the scope in silver to match barrel if possible.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
The tikka is a great gun, i dont have one but a friend and fellow hunter does in 30 06 and its all he uses for everything big game and he hunt deer moose and black bear with it. He says its a great gun accurate and sturdy, and has been trying to get me to buy one for a while. i haven't heard anything about this savage you mentioned but they do make good guns so i would imagine either way you go you'll be getting a good rifle. As far as calibers both you have mention are great for anything in North America in my opinion but you will get people saying that they aren't enough for even deer (magnum guys can step up here:p) As long as you use proper bullets and shot placement you'll take down what you after. For scopes i cannot help you as i only hunt with irons, but i'm sure there will be many opinions on which is best for you;) the prevailing theme though is that you should not cheap out on your glass because if it goes when you're in the bush you'll be SOL.

If you have limited funds(join the club) and are new to guns in general I advise you to hook up with a knowlegeable shooter and look at some used guns. You can save over 40% off the cost of a new gun and get one every bit as good, if you shop around. Modern rifles don't often wear out unless abused or owned by a person who burns thousands of rounds in them.
On the up side,you can use the money saved to buy that top of the line scope. Just my opinion.
 
Might not be your thing, but I'm LH and I picked up an H&R Ultra Hunter in .308, I like a break action single, and the hammer spur can be mounted for lefty cocking. Comes with the scope rail already in place.

I'm sure that you can buy a new an Ultra Hunter and a VERY decent scope/rings for 1200....

How easy is it to find used Lefties? I woud think it would be difficult to find the right rifle in the right caliber, no?

anyone use any of these two rifles?
 
IF you're more of a paper puncher my advice is get a .308 winchester....either gun will do. Choose the Savage if you're into upgrades (stocks / triggers /bolt handles etc.)
 
I have two Tikka's, so I think they are the best (Not bias at all....). Savage has an excellent rifle as well. Check the equipment exchange here, you might get a great deal on a leftie rifle. If not, the Tikka T3 stainless synthetic is about $800 here in the Edmonton area new.
As for scopes, check out the Burris Fullfield II or the Bushnell Elite 3200. Both excellent scopes and less than $300.

tikka's are nice as they rarely require work to make them shoot. i would say for your budget shop the ee's for a rifle and scope. only problem is there isn't as much lefty rifles. lots of good glass avalable. good luck and i hope you can find a package that will serve you well for years.
 
If you have $1200.00 to spend try find a rifle in the $600-$700 range and the rest on a scope rifles are created equal for the most part scopes are not stay a way from off shore scopes Leupold VX11 are about 489.00 and Bushnell 4200 are about the same

P&D in Edmonton has some Ruger Hawlkeyes in stock I think they are $699.00 , that leaves some money for a real nice Elite 4200 2.5-10,FS
 
I am left handed myself and have a Ruger 77mkII 30-06 stainless leftie as well as a Savage 99c lever 308 which doesnt care which hand you use. Tang safety and a lovely gun to shoot. I own a couple of CZs too and they make lefties as well. I bought my Savage 99c in 308 in very nice used cond for just under $400 and it has a $400 Nikon Monarch on it. Nice tight little groups at 200m any time I shoot. FWIW I paid about $750 for the Ruger a couple of years ago at Wholesale.

Well i was completely wrong here, I found a Tikka t3 lite left handed in .308 used on consignment today, I put an offer in, I hope he accepts. Beautiful rifle and in excellent condition. Selling it with an extra mag and a box of ammo aswell. Cross your fingers for me :D

I am a south paw and have been hunting for over 40 years as well as a gun
smith for 25 years. Since you are just getting started you will want to get a gun that will not be limited when time to sell and try new things. I have seen many guy's buy the wrong gun for there body type and then loose mony selling it. I always rec. Lever gun's to south paws and they resell easy.You can buy almost any Cal. in a lever. I use a 45/70 for Moose, bear and deer.
I have a 243 for small game. try to stay with moderet prised guns they resell easyer than the top line. Ken

The .308 and the .30/06 are two of the best big game cartridges available and you will do well with the choice of either. The '06 has an advantage if, like me, you have a preference for long heavy for caliber bullets, and the .308 is better if you prefer a short action rifle.

Choose your rifle by what fits you the best, by what grabs your imagination, and by what fits your budget. If a Savage or a Remington bolt action is what turns your crank then that's what you should get. If a lever action, a semi-auto, or a pump is your preference then choose one of those rather than a double bridge Mauser, as it leaves more of those for me.

If money is tight, don't over look a used rifle. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it is better to get a high quality used rifle than it is to get a low value bargain basement new rifle simply because it seems to fit your budget. The same applies to scopes and scope mounts. This isn't a good place to go cheap. A good ghost ring aperture rear sight and a post front sight can allow one to do very good shooting at a fraction of the cost of a good scope and mounts, and that choice will allow you time to save up for good glass.
 
I picked up that tikka today, such a nice rifle.

I strapped on a bushnell 3200 elite 3-9x40mm scope, now its time to hit up the range.

I have almost the same set up as you, but its right handed. all in all it cost about $1100, but i got good deals on everything including the sling because my buddy works for the shop.

if you dont mind me asking what did you end up closing at?
