Hi Guys,
I am newbie CGN. My wife and I began trap shooting (16 yards) this year. What a nice couple and social activity. We both shoot with a Benelli nova pump 12g 28'' mod choke. Or average is 20 and 15. She is 5'3'', 110. She take the Benelli recoil with no problem (1 1/8 oz, 3 dram). We don't want to pay more than 800$. What are your advices? Women CGN advices are welcome, as she will read them as well. Thanks.

Hi. If she likes the Benelli, buy another with a trap barrel, buy a trap barrel.
Where you are matters, but the Nova runs a wee bit under $700 plus the Government's cut, in Ontario.
Otherwise, take her shopping. The shotgun has to fit her and she has to like it, not you.

Also we want to try shooting doubles. We need semi-auto or over under.

Where are you located???
You should try the Trap and skeet thread, there is a bunch of good folks over there to help you with all sorts of great advice.

As another person mentioned but if your looking for shotgun for her it is important it fits her and makes no difference how it fits you.....did I mention Trap and Skeet is like a disease it creeps in slowly then you can not get rid of it LOL
have fun and enjoy.
BTW Glad you and wife want to play together that makes life so much more interesting and fun for all.

For doubles semi-auto is definitely not as good as O/U. I suspect only the Beretta semi-autos are good enough for doubles, and even then not as good.

You won't get a semi-auto Beretta (for trap) for less than $1000 unless you are very lucky or it's very beaten up, which trap guns rarely are.

For her size, she may be better off with a Youth/Ladies sized gun - shorter length of pull, and shorter barrel to balance. Or, if she can handle the weight of a dedicated trap gun, you'll need to get the butt cut down to fit her. But those long trap barrels will feel very muzzle-heavy if you do cut the stock.

I would recommend talking directly to a female trap shooter, preferably one who is also 5' 3".

Check out the ATI adjustable stocks. I've heard some say they work well. They have an adjustable length of pull and an adjustable for height cheekrest...
A shorter friend got one, then added lead at the buttpad to adjust the balance. I can't remember how though..

You must be desperate if you need a woman trap

Lol at that.

I'm not sure how it is where you shoot but everyone at my club is very willing to let you try their gun for a round or two which is a great way to get a feel for what works for you.
I'd definitely recommend this if its available to you, as buyers remorse after a $800 purchase is not fun.

I'd say 12G O/U for optimum choice, pricing, cost of ammo, and lowest recoil to weight ratio, but its really up to your sweetie to decide if the gun fits her and she likes shooting it. If you're going to spend any significant amount of money, find one that she can test out or a similar one before she buys.

The Benelli Comfortech is the softest recoiling 12 ga. available. Also has adjustable LOP and cheek rest. Should be perfect for a woman, or anyone that's recoil sensitive like a lot of shooters are that shoot long strings- including ME.

Gun fit is the most important aspect to success and comfort for long term clay target shooting. The last thing you want is a gun that hurts. A well fitting gun will also make a big difference in scores. Your $800 budget puts you into a good used 1100 ($450) or a good used Browning O/U and maybe even a Beretta O/U. You need to make sure that the guns are in good condition as it is easy to drop $400 in to a worn gun in repairs. Buying a good used gun at a reasonable price will make it easy to trade down the road, because you must realize that your first clay target gun is rarely your last. I know a number of folks that have probably bought and sold 40 clays guns in 40 years.

The advice to try a bunch of different guns is the best way to go. Look for short stocks and preferably "twisted" to which ever hand she shoots, with an adjustable comb and butt plate. Don't be in a big rush to find something but be ready to buy when the right one appears.

I take notice of all your advices. She shoot 2 Beretta Al 391 semi-auto and she liked them, one had a shorter stock. Tried a weatherby sa08, she felt more recoil, it is a lighter shotgun than the beretta. She began with the Benelli nova pump, both guns has less recoil. We will continue our try at the trap club. Thanks.
