I know... "do a search". I did and can't find any answers. In fact, it's almost impossible to find a thread on ATC that doesn't immediately degenerate into a :stirthepot2: thread.

SO.

Do any of you have one. I spend a lot of time outdoors, some hunting, but lots of other times as well. While I could pack a rifle while hiking/xcoutry skiing etc, a pistol would be a dozen times more practical.

I regularily spot wolf and bear tracks in the area I hike in. It does cause a fair amount of concern.

As far as I know 99.9% of all ATC's in Alberta are given out for work related purposes. They are only valid while the person is actively working. If someone in Alberta does have a personal non-work related ATC I am sure one of the conditions would require not making it public knowledge. On an interesting note I believe there are certain high profile public government positions where the individual is allowed a personal ATC, don't quote me but I believe that includes Mayors of major Canadian cities.

I believe all ATC for wilderness are work related. If you really want to carry a pistol you would have to go antique.

Yup, work only. Had an engineering professor that was allowed to carry while working in the bush. He was mauled by a grizzly years prior so that may have helped the application process...I don't know...???

I think there are maybe one or two people on the forum who admit to having them, and I believe they're work-related.

I thought there were a few of people on here that had them. I don't know what thread it was but a lot of people said they had them in it.

Yup met a few guys while working in the bush. All were foresters/engineers/geologists and worked in the bush for an employer who was willing to sign off on them needing a handgun over a shotgun/rifle due to them working in areas that were fly/boat/hike in.

Go antique, if you don't mind spending a "bit" more for your personal protection tool
And you're ok with more than a "bit" less firepower. Antiques are called such for a reason. The odd few chambered in modern-ish cartridges can be loaded to velocities that approach modern ammo, but certainly nothing I'd want to stake my life on against a grizzly.

One of my co-workers runs a trap line here in Alberta. About 2-3 years ago he got a letter from whatever govt dept or guild that oversees trappers and trap lines stating that they could now apply for an ATC for handguns while running their line. The condition is that it is to only be used to dispatch live animals in traps. No hunting or personal defence allowed.

Why don't you try writing that in proper English so we can understand what you are saying?

let me translate that, what he is saying is roughly:

Hello and good day, my good friend G-skrilla in Edmonton, Alberta has informed me that he received an ATC. He informed law enforcement about the ill dealings of his co-workers in order to receive favour in the eye of the law and now they are displeased with him for that act of betrayal. Since they feel betrayed they would like to seek revenge and take his life. The police department has given him an ATC to protect his life from his former co-workers. Thank you very much and have a wonderful day.

Since he said it in such a way makes me think he might just be trying to pull a leg as it is doubtful that they would arm an informant.
