hey guys,

i recently came into possession of a jc higgins model 60, 12 gauge, 2 3/4 with adjustable choke on the end. its an autoloader. My friends dad won this shotgun as an unpaid debt from a card game about 30 years ago. apparently he never shot it and it shows.

i do have some issues. im trying to take it apart to clean everything and get it working. does anyone have any resources to turn to for a tear down guide? ive got the foregrip off and the barrel nut off but i cant get this thing to budge. it'd be nice to have some sort of a manual to work off of. any help would be appreciated.
 
You can look up the High Standard Super Matic on line for info. Same gun. I looked at my Assembly/Disassembly for shotguns manual and the tear down for the model 60 encompasses 10 pages. Looks very complicated with a lot of small moving parts. It would be impossible to relay any ideas via written text. Enjoy the gun and learning about it while cleaning and re assembling.

well, i did a bunch of searching and turned up nothing of use earlier this morning. and now i find this as the first hit on google.. https://www.vintagegunleather.com/gun-manuals/pdf_J/jchiggins_model60shotgun.pdf well, there it is if anyone else needs it

one useful snippet in there, the barrel is permanently affixed to the action. cant disassemble it at all.. strange as i figured youd be able to remove the gas assembly and clean it all out. lots of sponging and wiping in my future.
 
Cleaning procedure for this type of gun remove wood spray all internal parts with some type of degreaser blow out with sir step 2 spray all parts with g 96 blow all parts out with air . Scrub Chamber with bush scrub bore with brush mop out chamber and bore . Reassemble and shoot guaranteed no issues .
 
I had one of these JC Higgins 60’s about 50 years ago. Can’t remember anything too remarkable about cleaning but at that time in my life I would have only used the most basic cleaning supplies available, and likely only with basic wipe down. I remember it was quite heavy & not the best balanced but that it always worked for me shooting ducks & geese with Canuck or Imperial shotshells. Don’t recall what I did with it, but owned a lot of different shotguns then so must have changed it up for something brighter & shinier.

I”ll bet this shotgun will will work without too much more than a cleaning and inspection for obvious deficiency. They never were too popular and now you don’t see or hear much About them, so possibly Both parts & expert help will be hard to find.

Good luck on this gun, it is nice to hear the story associated with its history.
