Any Bear hunters going out this spring?

lean , that's for sure.....

Actually, Spring bears are not lean at all, but quite fat, unless you are taking them way into June. Most of the fat stores are for after the bear comes out of the den, and very little food is available.

We always render gallons of lard off every bear taken in Spring. Always he eat them, too: smoked and roasted racks of ribs, bear bacon, chops, roasts and burger......they are delicious!

Like Greywolf said, a lot depends on what they have been eating.

The bears we hunt in the Yukon are not near garbage dumps or spawning fish. In Spring hunts, we spot and stalk on early slides in the mountains, and on rivers, the bears rooting vetch and browsing wild leeks.

Fall bears that have been into berry patches for a couple of weeks are about as good table fare as you can find, but I have never had a bad Spring bear, either. :)

River Rat
and I are heading out in May. He is going to try and get this guys older brother. :D

Taken in an old burn while browsing crocus shoots. They pop up by the thousands up here in early Spring. You can see a clump right next to this bear's tummy.

hmmm , wonder if location has anything to do with it ? I have found exactly the opposite, mind you here in south MB they have plenty of food , when they come out of the dens. Oh yes , garbage dumps and fish definitely equals disgusting table fare when it comes to bear meat.

the more mature the bear, the more likely it is to have fat stores remaining when they come out of den.
bears that are no longer "on the grow" will put more towards their fat reserves.
If you have never had a lean bear it means yer likely doin things right imo.

sure there will be fat stores remaining , but you won't be getting gallons of lard in the spring. they come out lean , and by that i mean they won't be big and fat as in the fall. My last bear was mature, took him in mid may, and had wayyyy less fat on him than he would have had even by september. He's hanging in my livingroom atm , very lean at this point :p

I would love to go bear hunting, but i have never been hunting before. So if there is anyone in the Calgary area who would take me out and show me the ropes i would greatly appreciate it.

yeah? My dad also said Greenstone wouldnt be bad, as long as the sun had got to some of the snow.
Ive never hunted Bears before, so Im a little un-informed.

I'm hoping to get a bear this spring. Mother's getting a chill in her advancing age, and I'd like to give her a nice bear blanket.

I am going to be in the squamish area early/mid april. snow finally melted away now. I still have a feeling they will be out later this year. still pretty cold.

This will be my first bear season too. anyone know of a good video or instructions on an effective way of field dressing black bears?

im not sure if it happened before but this year(happened last year spring time too), the ontarioservicecareers had a opening for a bear management technician, maybe we will see a spring hunt sometime soon:/
