Hi,
Most of the original C96 that I have seen, the throat and or the barrel is shot out ( pitted and corroded ) A pristine one, will run at $2500 or better.
You have to look at the locking lug for damage.
A friend of mine and I have relined several to 7.62 X 25 The 9mm is more difficult as there is not much metal left to reline.
Also getting a barrel liner is expensive, as we can no longer get liners or barrels from the USA (USA Homeland Security prohibits it )
As a matter of fact there is a relined C96 in the classified section here on CGN.
While working on these guns, an interesting fact came to life. Most all parts are not interchangeable without machining or fitting.
Fortunately the stripper clips( stock up on stripper clips, as they are getting harder to find ) and magazines mostly work OK.
Considering the C96 was one of the first semi-auto and full auto pistols issued to the military, makes for an ideal collector item.
I'm old now ( Old Ford ) but waaay back when I was younger, had more hair, walked straighter, and better looking, you could buy a C96 for pocket change. NOT ANYMORE!
So, if you have a good lead on a good C96 at a good price, get it! It is money in the bank.
If the barrel is toast, a reline job will run $400 to $600, so consider that.
The problem with the C96 is that the original ammo was corrosive and ate the barrels out.
Consider that the people that had possession of these guns could not read or write, and did not know how to clean these guns.
Hell, much of the ammo today is still corrosive.
However that 7.62 X 25 cartridge was quite awesome for it's time. 1700 fps for a hand gun!
Sorry for the long rant!
Best regards!
Fred
