Any Canadian gunsmiths installing M16 extractors on 700 bolt?

I'm looking to do a hunting/precision .308 build on a Magpul stock.

I think I'll go with a stock 700 action and upgrade it as funds allow.

One of the things I'd like to upgrade right away is the extractor. I've been reading about the Sako and M16 upgrades and think the M16 is the way to go.

Are there any Canadian gunsmiths doing this modification?

Are custom bolt assemblies available that are already modified in this way?

Thanks

A PTG would be the way to go, if you wish to compromise the superior breeching inherent in the 700 design. Because you will never, ever, experience a case failure, the conversion should work well for you.

Thank you both. I don't have much experience with the 700 but I've seen, read, watched, and experienced weak/poor extraction with the 700 action.

I did read that the Sako extractor mod can be dangerous in the event of a case or primer failure. However the M16 extractor mod is supposed to be stronger and safer.

What about the M16 extractor mod is unsafe or unwise?

What other ways can extraction issues be fixed if issues arise?

If I could get a Mauser style bolt and extractor for the 700 I'd go that route. I prefer a CRF with big beefy extractor but none of the CRF rifles fit in the Magpul stock.

Are you referring to the extractor being weak or the lack of primary extraction on some 700's. A new extractor will do nothing to help with primary extraction.

Forget about the extractor unless you have an issue with it. It’s such a small percentage have that issue it’s not even funny. Put that money to something that will better utilize its value. Pillars and bedding the stock, buying more ammoand practicing with the rifle while learning it and the scope together, maybe do a trigger job ar get an aftermarket trigger. Just a few examples of stuff that is better than worrying about a problem that doesn’t exist.

I had a case failure in a Remington 700 that had a Sako extractor installed on it. it was a 7mm Mag that separated right above the belt on the shot. Extracted the base of the case and left the remainder in the chamber. No damage at all was done to the rifle.

The extractor job was done by an old gunsmith in western Sask that I believe has since passed away.

You had a case separation. No release of high pressure gas. If you experience a catastrophic case failure, the difference is dramatic.

Guntech on here has some real life experience with a Sako installed extractors, maybe PM him and ask his advice.

^This. Lots of new Rem 700s suffer from poor primary extraction, nothing to do with the extractor. The problem lies in the poor timing of the camming ramp on the bolt to the ramp on the receiver. Do a bit of googling and you'll see plenty of videos on the subject. It's particularly common on the RR series receivers. Best thing to do is shoot your new rifle and if the problem does arise, get it sorted. There's a guy in the States, Dan Armstrong, if memory serves who has a jig specifically for fixing this, it'll run you about $60usd +ship.

Thank you for the info.

You said build so not sure if that includes a rebarrel at the same time-but consider that the use of the M16 extractor on a Remington requires a larger ID on the bolt nose recess on the rear of the barrel. I believe it allows the extractor room to snap over the edge of the case rim when chambering a round.

I added a PTG bolt with M16 style extractor to a Remington 700 300 WM build and my Stiller action uses a M16 style extractor as well.

Enlarging the diameter of the barrel face counterbore would complete the elimination of the safety breeching designed into the Model 700.

One thing that I have always wondered about the premium, high precision actions manufactured by smaller specialist companies - how many of these actions have been tested to destruction?
