Any Canadian gunsmiths installing M16 extractors on 700 bolt?

Maybe Roger Kotanko at Dark International in Simcoe can help you out. He just saved a Colt Model 3.5.7. Magnum for me. 1 519 426 6739. He is in the shop only at night time. Give him a call.

Enlarging the diameter of the barrel face counterbore would complete the elimination of the safety breeching designed into the Model 700.

One thing that I have always wondered about the premium, high precision actions manufactured by smaller specialist companies - how many of these actions have been tested to destruction?

I know it's kind of crazy to defeat that safety feature of Remington's design! all my other Remmy's use factory extractors-even those with fitted PTG bolts, but the 300 WM is a Mk13 clone so I wanted to try to be accurate-it is a little unsettling good thing I load on the conservative side and always always wear eye pro.

The Stiller Tac338 has a .750" bolt diameter and their tenon drawings call for a .790"! bolt nose recess. Badger Ordnance drawings call for a .785" bolt nose recess on Rem 700 bolt in Magnum calibre fitted with a M16 extractor.

I guess they put a lot of trust in that little roll pin that holds it in place but I agree with you....

I'm looking to do a hunting/precision .308 build on a Magpul stock.

I think I'll go with a stock 700 action and upgrade it as funds allow.

One of the things I'd like to upgrade right away is the extractor. I've been reading about the Sako and M16 upgrades and think the M16 is the way to go.

Are there any Canadian gunsmiths doing this modification?

Are custom bolt assemblies available that are already modified in this way?

Thanks

By the time you replace the bolt you are within only a few dollars more of a custom action that has better spec's and features.
The factory 700 bolt is a compilation of several pieces that are all induction brazed together to create the bolt.
To mill the slot required for an M16 style extractor means you are cutting completely through the braze that holds the bolt head to the bolt body. Many of us believe this significantly weakens the integrity of the bolt. The reason most of the custom action makers, including us, make 1 piece bolts is so as to avoid this situation.

I can only speak for our actions and yes we had them proof tested to destruction.

these guys make really nice actions, reloading presses and rings and other good stuff, listen when they speak Jefferson
