any chance of identifying powder

The powder could be so old that it has changed burn rate due to it drying out, no smell. Even if you find the type of powder its structure may be different. DANGER will Robison DANGER!

I've used mystery shotgun powder for light pistol loads: 3 grains of it under 148 grain lead wadcutters in 38 Spl. Shot in my 686. It was from a guy who reloaded for trap shooting, he died and I bought some of his gear from the estate.
My point is like Ganderite: it is possible to find a use for powder. If it were stored improperly that use might be reconsidered.

HI; Years back I was given a full cardboard container of sealed Blue Dot powder, it had faded blue dot and smelled funny. I UNDER loaded a 12 gauge slug load. WELL when I touched off the first shot the white flash blinded me and the recoil bent my shoulder backward so hard my chest hurt. After my eyeballs regained there sight I went home, pulled rounds and disposed of it in a safe manner.

I did the same about 4 or 5 years ago but with about 12 or 14 pounds.
I just about cried...
Entertaining to watch burn though...
If you don't know what it is it is no longer gun powder, unfortunately it's as simple as that.
Good on you for lighting it up.
