any classic double guns waterfowling?1

If (big if) I were to go waterfowl hunting, I could take my Dad's old Tobin double. 12 ga. both full choke, hand made fore-end (metal and wood). Kicks like a mule but is a real family treasure. But, seeing as lead shot for waterfowl would cause the end of the world, I'll take it upland hunting, using only paper Imperial Special Long Range shells, of course. Dad never used anything else.

A pic of my Merkel 16 and a mixed bag. Tungsten matrix 5's work very well in this gun.

And with a limit of Canadas

I was using a BSS but went to an auto loader. Too much $ to feed it. In the old lead days I had a sxs 10 that I loved. Old black power guns were a hoot to use (only with like mind friends).

I shoot geese and ducks with my vintage hammer doubles regularly .
in the 12's I use FFG and either Bismuth or Nice Shot with an all brass case .
I also use a Pedersoli hammer double cartridge gun that I can use steel in.

How do you like the pedersoli? I've been looking at one of their sxs 50 Cal muzzleloaders for deer hunting. Their barrels aren't regulated and it comes with dual rear sights. Fit and finish is nice. Are their smooth bores the same?

Fantastic firearm with nice case hardening and browned browned barrels!:dancingbanana:

To me classic for this thread is basically anything with fixed chokes designed for lead predating the mandatory steel shot. So 20 years and older roughly

My 101 is on it's 27th season and came with factory flush mount screw chokes. They say Winchoke on them and are identical 100% to the original invector choke. In fact I purchased an invector choke many years ago for a second skeet choke. I have killed a god awful pile of waterfowl with that gun. In fact I just finished up 4 days of waterfowling back to back using that gun exclusively. I have shot thousands of rounds of steel through it. I never go tighter than an IM choke and #2 shot as Winchester recommended when I called them back in the late 90's. My preferred barrel config is M over IC.

I dont know about putting categories on things but I had one hell of a shoot about 2 weeks ago with my cz ringneck 28ga. 11 ducks and one specklebelly. Not one cripple, even the goose that was about 35y out. #6 hevishot reloads from the factory imp mod and full. Just crushed em, killed four wigeon stone dead with two shots in the second flight.

By that definition, I have my Browning Superposed and 70's BSS's out regularly... don't often take waterfowl pictures, but I will next time out and post them.

Not that it is a "Classic", but my firearms pusher (crack dealer) just hooked me up with a 2003 Browning Citori Mossy Oak... a tough gun to source... should be here Tuesday and will be in use on flights Wednesday morning...

I have double barrel Ithaca 20 ga. with double triggers of my Dads that I think dates from the 30's. He gave it to me when I was 15 and started hunting, hunted ducks, rabbits and even groundhogs with it back then. Now it rides the ATV and is the official partridge gun. The old girl is going strong.

Browning BSS and waterfowl

Heres my 1st contribution to this excellent thred! Several years ago I searched for the perfect 12ga for shooting geese (both over decoys and pass shoots)

This is a photo from last year I belive , from a late afternoon sitting on a hilltop, fence corner, shooting snows as they come off to feed.... I have had several BSS shotguns over the years and now down to 2 shooters. I love the way they perform with steel shot using the factory chokes of IC/M ... and I mainly shoot 2-3/4 #4's , and sometimes 3" #2's or BB ... But the 4's give a great pattern and often take geese from 40+ yards.

Ducks with the 16 and Bismuth .. and geese!

My Hunting pal and I had a great morning near Moose Jaw Sask .... This shot from 2 Octobers ago.....
The old LC Smith 16 bore took a limit of quackers and 3 snow geese.
I handload #5 Bismuth for the ducks and that load swats em pretty nicely... For the occasional goose that wanders into the decoys, I have a few Bismuth 2's on hand.
This old Smith is my fav of all sxs shotguns. Its light, quick handling and I seem to connect when I swing on a bird. The only downside is the cost of the bismuth handrolled ammo, but its worth it to me to be able to shoot this well loved vintage shotgun!

Great post and pic. I love older A.H Fox doubles and my favourite is a 16 double. I would like to send you a pm to ask where you get your supplies, etc. I'm very interested in putting together a set up to load quality, low pressure 16 bore game loads for grouse and ducks.

I got out finally. Only took 2 blue bills but I used my Spanish double wing sxs 10 ga. I was hoping for some big northerns. I'm still working on finding the perfect sxs for waterfowling. I think an AyA is a great candidate to try next
