There's a Sauer 16ga/.30-30 combination gun that's waiting for me to say "I do". Anyone here using a combination gun (other than a Savage 24). Please share with the group.

Nice idea. I've wanted one, but never found the right combo of money and timing, Lol.
A 22LR/ 12 ga with choke tubes would be the best for me.

Shot one a couple of times...
By this I mean I shot my buddies Sauer in 7x57R over a 16 gauge.
Shot center fire at targets and the 16 gauge was used on a few grouse.
One grouse was tipped and had to use the gun as a club to knock it outta the sky...well waist height anyways.
Either you like them or you dont.
They (Euorpean Combo Guns are generally set up for shooting from a stand or blind and not for stalking...
High Scope mounts are a pia as they offer little cheek weld .
You Results May Vary/Differ.

addendum... there is an interesting Valmet in 308/12gauge with a scope listed with scope on the EE that actually appears to refute my cheek weld comments.

Love combination guns...have a Tikka in .222/12 gauge and a Savage in .22wmr over .410 bore.

Years ago I always thought combos were kind of an abomination, but they are actually incredibly useful.

If I can ever find a 30-06/12 gauge that doesn't have a spaghetti thin rifle barrel, that would be the cat's meow...

Someone explain to me scopes on combination guns. I don't see the logic.

The logic is clear as day on my CZ584 (12ga over 7X65R): The open sights only adjustment is for windage... otherwise they are a fine partridge sight. It is my first combination gun and it is gorgeous but I'd probably have ditched the 2-7X32 if not for the sight issue. The mentioned scope came with my gun and is an intelligent choice considering what a combination gun can be used for.

That aside, it's a beautiful setup I've only had it for a month and field testing awaits to bolster any opinion I might offer on the subject of combination gun usefulness.

So how does one utilize the shotgun barrel with the scope? Besides slugs of course.

It's not very good for wing shooting, but for relatively stationary targets like partridge, or even use with buckshot on deer/coyotes, it works well enough as long as the barrels are properly regulated. It would usually be used on a gun where the rifle barrel is the main use, and the shotgun barrel is of secondary/backup use.

I have a Tikka 512S in 12ga/.308, with a second set of barrels in 12ga. They're nice, versatile guns. Not overly popular in North America, but are much more common in Europe where a larger variety of game is hunted at the same time.

Ever see a guy on the trap deck with a scope trap gun?

In my 30+ years of clay sports and wing shooting I have somehow missed seeing one of those ;)

The scope is removed when chasing feathered fowl and when it is time to go to the stand one installs the scope back in place.
Rob

Now that you mention it, QR scope bases seem to be the norm when scopes are present.

ninepointer, there is a gun at the Vancouver Gun club who routinely shoots his 1100 trap with a 3-9 Zeiss or sometimes a 6 power scope mounted to his vent rib.
He is a machinist by trade and a fine shooter as well.
It is fun to watch him head out on deck and smash those clays...especially when everyone is looking at one another and going ''wtf'' is he up to?
Well, not really new to the crew he shoots with.
It works for him .
Sorry, didnt mean to detract from the original intent of the thread.

I shoot a Krieghoff Trumpf Dural Drilling, 16x16/7x57R with .22 mag insert barrel in the left shotgun tube. It is equipped with a Kahles 3-9 scope in claw mounts, instantly removable and replaceable with extreme precision, always returns to zero. Same with the Krieghoff Semper insert barrel. I just used it last week on a backpack hunt for grouse and bear. It is light, handy, and the ultimate in versatility.

I also have a Merkel BBf ( o/U combination gun ) in 16a. over 7x57R. It is equipped with a Hensoldt 4x in claw mounts. Very trim, accurate, and handles like a fine bird gun should, because it is also equipped with a second set of 16/16 barrels 28" Mod/Imp Mod. I have used it for combination grouse/rabbit/deer hunts with the combination barrel set, and shot my fist and only wolf so far with it.

Lastly I have a Heym BBF in 16ga./ .222 that i use when calling coyotes in close cover. It has a 2-4X scope in claw mounts.

I recently sold a Sauer pre-war drilling in 16x16 /8x57JR that handled like a fine bird gun. The rifle barrel, although never used for big game, was a comfort while hunting ptarmigan in the high alpine of BC grizzly bear country.

I have owned many other combination guns and after being frustrated by them I got rid of them all. Poor regulation of barrels, poor fit and finish, and poor function plagued all of them. These German guns are keepers. There is a world of difference between cheap rough American made combination guns and the very fine pieces of functional art made by the europeans, especially Germans and Austrians.

I own a Baikal 12 Gauge over a 308 Winchester combination gun.
I just love it. I have all kinds of moose hunting or duck/grouse guns. When I go for a truck ride I usually take the 12/308, this way I can shoot ducks partridge and bears/moose. I do not use it when I have to walk as it is heavy. Being heavy helps it absorb recoil. I was really surprised as to how well it shoots. Upt to 300 yards is no problem. I also have an old Savage 22.410. I find that I take it out often. Very good for Grouse and the 22 is good for Grouse or plinking. My walking gun is a Remington model 7 in .308.
By bear bait checking rifle is a little H&R model 58 in 30-30 caliber.
