the young lad that works for us(19yrs old) just bought a Savage Model 10TR in .308 he has absolutely no experience shooting rifles other than a Rem 597 .22, but has an interest in learning. Would any of you know if there are courses offered, a club he could join, or perhaps even someone who would mentor him in the Fraser Valley?
I'm more of a pistol, CQB shooter, so I am of no use to him in this, lol, he does have some pistol and AR experience, and has good ,safe handling skills already.
Also, could anyone recommend a factory ammo to start out with, he is not a reloader at this point, although I'm sure he will become one if he sticks with it.
Thanks
Edgy

Hi Edgy

Mission district rod and gun would be a good place to start. They are set up for rifle, shotgun, pistol, etc. People are pretty good at helping new shooters. As for suggesting ammo, every rifle is different. You have to buy different boxes of ammo and see what works.

Hope it helps.

The BC Rifle Association is definitely the go to club for long range shooting in BC, and they have access to a 600m government range which looks awesome. Not aware of any ranges longer than that in BC besides setting lining up on a crown land power line.

I also have a Savage 10TR, and I've had great success with Hirtenberger 7.62x51 FMJ (.308 Win).

Affordable price, and accuracy that rivals quality new production (although not exactly match quality). Definitely a step up from el-cheapo Norinco .308.
I talked to the guy at Tradex and he says all the 720 cases are boxer primed, i.e. good for reloading.

Thanks for the info VanStone, very much appreciated, I will pass it on to the young lad, he is pretty excited to try some long range, but he is going to need some coaching lol

Thanks jacpor,,I heard Mission goes out to 300?? I'm guessing that's the longest public range around, so I will pass it on :)

Poco goes to 200m, mission to 300m. Kamloops has a 600m range if I'm not mistaken.

Look up project mapleseed. No events scheduled in BC currently but if they make it out this way that would be a good way to learn about good rifle technique.

Contact the BCRA as there are F class, TR and PR type events shot at the Chilliwack military base.... also open sessions to go practise. These will go out to 600m. There is lots of very experienced shooters that shoot there.

Kamloops is the next closest. This weekend, there will be an F class match and we will be shooting out to 900yds. We would be happy to show him the ropes and answer questions. If he comes out, look for me... Jerry Teo... Tall Asian guy.

Lots of talent shooting at the Mission range as well. Never been to Poco so not sure about the scene there.

Wrt to factory ammo, grab an assortment and test to see what his rifle prefers... but after that little adventure, he would have spent enough to buy a basic reloading kit and make ammo better tuned to his rifle. If he wants to shoot, pretty hard to do it with factory ammo. Reloading offers a far better accuracy vs cost value.

That'll get him started. If he has questions, he can pm or email me and I will be happy to help.

Jerry

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated! The young lad now has his rifle in his possession, very nice rifle I have got to say! Now it's time to start reading up on all of this,,,looks like I will be learning along with him, lol, I'm quite excited to give this a try,,although, like you Still alive,,the eyes aren't what they once were :)
The young lad will be joining the BCRA in the spring when they renew their membership, and we have found a local guy that gives lessons,, so that is where we will start
