Building 2 Mauser actioned rifles 1 for hunting and 1 for precision shooting and am looking for ideas and advice on my builds.. So if there is any out and about and you wouldnt mind posting pics and lists of mods it would be greatly appreciated.. The actions i will be using are a Mauser Magnum and a santa barbara 98!

Fancy wood or synthetic, modern styling or classic or modern-classic?
Here is the 6mm rem I had for a couple years. For modern classic it was hard to beat.

If it had a QD ring design and irons I might have kept it but hogged it out to something useful like 280 AI.
Wrist and butt were too slender to go any heavier in caliber/chambering.

My picture-posting ability sucks, but my brother built me a 338-06 several years ago and its a gem.
Built on a VZ24 Mauser and stocked by him it has a Mod. 70 style safety, Timney trigger, Warne bases, and a Douglas Premium barrel.
He put it together in the days before super-lightweight rifles were the vogue, so it has a 26" barrel and is not light.
On a good day when I do my part it will keep everything in or under 3/4" with 210 Partitions being the favorite bullet.

6.5 -06 is a great calibre in the mauser. ensure a tight chamber, have the action trued, bolt lugs lapped and bolt face as well. get a good quality barrel and pillar bed the action into a nice laminate stock. free float the barrel and have at it. Target recessed crown. I like barrels around the 26" mark and .750 muzzle, might be a bit heavier than you are wanting but suffice to say you will be happy with the result. Trigger is recommended as well. the last one i did in this calibre had a muzzle diameter of 1" so was pretty much a straight tube but it shoots.

Just about finished my 9.3 x 64 mm Brenneke on a 1944 98 Mauser action. I'll have to find some pics and attach them. I had my gunsmith fit a 26-inch Heym barrel and drill and tap for scope mounts, then I did all the rest. I even scratch-built a tang safety for my Timney trigger. Soon I will be out for Elk with it.....

Erik.

Here's a shot of my 9.3X62.

Specifics include:

-Brazilian Model 1908 Oberndorf action without the stripper hump/slot removed
-21" Bevan King barrel re-profiled to approx a .60" muzzle
-Dayton-Traister trigger
-Model 70-style safety
-Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad
-Talley barrel band
-Leopold bases and rings with the rear base altered to accomodate the stripper hump
-Leupold VXI 2-7X33 matte scope
-Talley-style bolt handle from Ralf Martini
-Quarter-sawn Black walnut stock with ebony forend tip, grip cap and bolt-stop lever shelf
-Slow rust bluing
-trigger guard has been slimmed and tapered

The rifle weighs 8 1/4 lbs ready to shoot. And it does shoot!!! I recently put 3 Nosler Partitions into 1.25" at 200 meters.:)

how about 6.5x54 M/S? a great little all around caliber, and if you have one with a magnum bolt face might i throw the .358 Norma Mag into thering as an option

I built up a 1908 Brazilian when I took one of those correspondence gunsmithing courses 20 years ago. Here's what I did:
-1908 Brazilian action
-welded on Brownells turned down handle
-26 inch .375 Whelen Improved barrel of unknown make
-redid the stock two stage to break clean in one stage
-tupperware stock
-S&K steel bases and rings
-Parkerized the works to a flat dark grey.
-Redding dies and LC-69 brass (I got tired of Morons looking at my brass and saying "if it's a 375 why does your brass say 30/06?"
I've had hundreds of guns since. They all come and go but this gun stays. Shoots flat, hits hard.

This is my 7X57 - love it, only other action I own is pre-64 model 70

Started with a Kar 98
Brownell's - sights, steel grip cap and checkered butt pad, recessed sling swivels, Win pre-64 safety, Talley mounts and custom stock topped w/ Leupold 2.5 X.

Same guy is building 300 & 375 H&H matched pair on FN Mauser actions should be ready next spring.

I have a 404 Rimless on a 98. I did the rails, feed ramp, trigger(timney) and the stock needed oiling and just got a new extractor as the original was not tight enough for my liking. The stock is satin now as this was halfway through the reno.
