I am a long time owner of a Detonics Combat Master Mark VI.

Just wondering how many of these are out there in Canada-land. They are 12(6).

Do you shoot them or are they collectors items. Any info appreciated.

Don't own one my self, but was over at the bosses and he was showing off his collection to me and he pulled one out. nice little gun'he bought it new in the mid 70's i think, but has never shot it. going to have to take it to the range one day.

Had one in the early 80's. Was a jamamatic with pretty much all the ammo I ran through it. Bought a Star PD and sold the Detonics, never looked back in terms of function. This was before Colt brought out their Officer's Model, so the selection of small 45's was pretty limited. Much more choices today, just not in Kanuckistan. - dan

Thanks for the input. I am wondering how scarce these are in Canada.

I bought mine from a Dr from eastern Canada via an internet auction and he had fired it very little; in my conversations with him before the purchase he was leading me to believe that he had carried it at some point in his life but we all know how limited legal CCW is in Canada. Anyway it came in prestine shape with 2 original Detonics mags (worth $100 ea themselves to collectors) and a commander mag plus a slick carry holster. It is by no means a lite gun being all stainless steel. And it's unique because the Detonics was the first commercial attempt at what we now know as the commander size 1911.

I have shot this little piece quite a bit and it's always a hit at the range due to it's limited numbers in Canada. I have fed it 230gr RN bullets exclusively, hard lead, FMJ and hollowpoints and have never had an issue with jams. This gun does require a firm grip when shooting to aid in cycling, as do all 1911 style pistols in my experience. Even my custom built IPSC gun will sometimes jam if you "limp wrist" it.

Again, thanks for the answers and would like to hear of any'all experiences that fellow CGN's have had with this pistol.

I'm basically fishing to see if there would be a market for this piece in Canada or if I should take it with me when I move my hardware south permanently this summer.

It might well be worth more money in the US, they have quite a collectors following in the States. Also the previous owner may have been able to carry it - up until the late 1970's all you needed to carry a firearm was a letter from the Chief of Police. I knew someone who had quite a few of those letters for the City of Vancouver. Of course we were less "civilized" then.

Here's a link to a great and informative article about the beginnings of the Detonics Combat Master series handguns by the original designer, Pat Yates.

AS for the Star PD being the first small size 45, I was referring to the first production 1911 small sized pistol.

That is sweet. And heavy looking.

What's that bad boy weigh in at?

I have only one good pic of my Combat Master Mk VI but have never posted pics online. Gonna have to learn how to do that one of these days.
