Any drawbacks to having 20 MOA on rail AND 20 MOA on scope mount?

I currently have a 308 with 20 MOA rail. I don't plan on shooting past 1000 yards and realistically half that. I am considering a scope which comes with a 20 MOA rail. Is there anything drawback that could result in this set up? I am sure a 0 MOA scope rings would be fine for what I am using it for, but this is just what is offered.

possibly.
depends on the scope you pick. Some have huge amounts of elevation adjustment, like over 100moa, some not so much, like 40-50moa.

just the 20moa rail by itself "should" be fine.
The serious long range shooters here will be able to give you the best recommendations.
 
What kind of scope has a 20 moa rail built in???

I am using a 20 moa rail, and 30 moa in the rings. Shoot from 100m and up.

I think it is more of the question can your scope set to zero with the 40 moa against it to start, plus what ever inconsistency is built into the rifle barrel mount?

You don't need 40 moa to shoot 500M.
 
Not really an issue, depending on how much internal adjustment is in your specific optic. A very general rule of thumb (IE always checks), but on a 34MM tube, it shouldn't be an issue. The one thing to watch out for is pinning the erector inside to the extremes (IE, right at the end of the travel), which can cause optical weirdness.
 
It is a Zero Compromise ZCO 527 and it comes with a similar single piece mount as Spurh makes with the 20 MOA built in the mount. I think you are hitting on what I was feeling but didnt adequately express. The Scope has 35 MIL adjustment and there should not be any inconsistency in the rifle as it is a new Cadex Seven Stars.

assuming you genuinely dont know and arent trolling, you should have no problems.

35mils is 120moa. Which gives you 60moa up/down if zeroed at exact center. Of the rifles and scopes ive had, none have ever zeroed to the exact center of the scope adjustments.
subtract 40moa and you should have approx 20moa remaining "down" and 100moa "up" on the elevations dial. I think that should be correct.
 
Thanks, I know the scope could do it at 36mm but just felt there was something I am missing given the lopsided range up and down from zero. This scope is pricey.....just needed to hear it from someone else so I can go into the purchase without second guessing myself.
 
I have a 10-50x60 higher end target scope that I want to dual purpose between 100 M airgun and 400 M 308.

I chose to mount a 0 MOA rail on the 308 (the air riffle default rail) and the scope mount has a 20 MOA built in.

I like to mount the scope higher. The scope is zeroed @ 100 M with a air rifle - very close the scope mechanical center and can go down comfortably to 50 M or shorter, and I have couple clicks only to switch there and back between two guns.

The other thing is the "scope height" you shall consider, the higher covers more distance short to long.

Yea you will be fine. I use the ZCO 420 on my hunting rifle with a 20 moa rail, and set at 100m zero, dial out to 1300m no problems. With a 40 moa combo, just means you will have more top end of room to dial out, if and when you want to stretch the legs of the 308 out a bit more.
