Any Drillings owners?

"...a drilling is..." Usually a double barrel shotgun with a rifle barrel underneath. Very European. Krieghoff makes them starting at about $10,500US new. Used prices vary according to the guage of the shotgun barrels, but are considerably less expensive.

I handled a few in a gunshop in Cologne, Germany in January. That just made me want one more! I'm still looking.... A nice Merkel, 16ga. over 7x65R, and low power scope in claw mounts for me please!!

I had a Sauer in 16ga over8x57jrs, took it to James Bay for geese and drove all theIndian guides nutz!!! One gun for cariboo and geese/ptarmigan!!!! Ah well I eventually sold it like so many others sigh! JITC

I had one when I was a kid.

22lr on top and 410 on the bottom. I think was made a company from France called Cooey?

Oh wait, it has to have 3 barrels to be a drilling. My mistake.

I've had 3 they do not lend themselfes to hunting in North America as well as they do in the "old country". I never seemd to need the other barrels. ie; if i'm using the rifle I carry the extra SxS for nothing. Same for the shotguns.( but maybe a 20 over a 223) to each his own AJ

I don't know, every time I go deer hunting, Quail pop up everywhere. So if the day is shot for deer, why not some bird hunting.

Drillings, a fine form of madness.

I have one with a Schmitt & Bender 58mm objective 2 to 10 power scope in claw mounts, 2X12 ga. over 9.3X74R with a Kreighoff .22 cal insert for the right shot barrel. The .22 will shoot minute of grouse and is almost silent.

Great toys!!

I have a question about he right barrel choice for an insert. The front trigger fires the right shotgun barrel, ( or the insert) but the mechanism will only pop up the rear sight if the rifle barrel is activated. So wouldn't it make more sense if the left barrel held the .22 insert? the only way to shoot the .22 accurately is with the scope installed. Doesn't make sense to me, someone have a better perspective?

220 swifty, you wingshoot with no scope. That's why they invented claw mounts. Return to zero, every time. take off with one quick motion.

NO the front trigger is build to push forward to use em sensitive. High sensitive trigger.
If you use the front trigger without pushing forwards you pull em like a shotgun trigger.
Ether way you can use both triggers like shotgun trigger, ( without pushing forward ) or use the front trigger as a match trigger.

Andreas, I agree, and my Sauer does have the set trigger feature for use with the rifle barrel. But if the shooter puts a .22rf insert barrel inside the right shotgun barrel, and then wants to shoot that barrel accurately, he will not have a rear sight to aim with, because with most drillings the rear sight will not pop up unless the rifle barrel selector has been pushed. It would make more sense to me if the left shotgun barrel held the insert, because then the right barrel could be used as a shotgun with the normal front trigger pull, the rear trigger could be used with the left barrel if the rifle barrel selector was pushed to activate the pop-up rear sight, and of course the rifle could be used with the front trigger, either set or unset, when the selector is slid forward. Does that make any sense? So please explain why I see drillings with an insert barrel on the right. It does not seem logical to me.

In answer to the wing shooting with the scope, well, it's an aquired skill. lol

The idea of the 58mm S&B is for late in the day stand shooting. It's amazing what a scope of that quality and objective size will show when the light is poor. Vertical black bars become trees with gray and brown bark and black lumps become bushes with colour. Truly remarkable piece of glass. Was on the piece when I bought it and the claw mount truly does work for return to zero.

On occasion my Dad will receive a Kettner or Franconia catalog from relatives in Germany......drool drool. There are some works of art desguised as firearms in there. Those Drillings are beautiful but I don't think I'd like to pack one for a day unless I was sitting in a stand like the Europeans.
