For quite a while now I've had an interest in building a bolt action 223 that can feed 223 rounds that are too long for the typical AR15 style magazine length.

I've come across some AI mags that have ears for the 223 and they actually hold rounds long enough for a 308 which I think might fit the bill.

Anyway the idea would be to run a Rem 700 short action clone in a chassis stock that takes AI Mags and chamber it in 223 and run 80 grainers seated long for increased case capacity. Basically its the same load that many of us run in a single shot F-Class rifle.

Just wondering if any of you guys have tried such a rig and what success feeding long 223s from the AI mag?

I'm not sure they will actually take longer rounds or if they've plugged them, or if anyone makes a long version.

Here's a ling to such a mag on Brownells.

I've got a few of those, there just 308 mag with a plastic insert. They are 100% reliable and well made, as they come they will accommodate a pretty long 223 round but if you file a notch out of the front of the plastic insert they can take even the longest 90gr Bullets with room to spare.

What would you like to know? AI polymer 223 mags are completely different from the steel versions but you can use a longer OAL then any AR mag.

Got a couple that are excess to my needs if you want.. pm or email.

Thanks

Thanks guys for your responses.

What is the longest OAL round you can fit in these mags that will successfully feed?

I'm running an accurate mag with 75 amax seated long work great. My buddy and I have modified some of the MDT poly mags for the 90's seated way out there. I'd have to double check some OAL measurements.

Wow, that's cool guys.

I have a custom Sako in 223 rifle that I've shot quite a bit with 80 grain SMKs and I love the gun, but I can't feed the rounds from the mag. This rifle has cleaned up in ISU and F-Class matches over the years, but looses it's edge if used as a repeater with 69 grainers.

Sounds like this will be the plan for a replacement or maybe just a sibling to my Sako.
