Any experience with rebarrelling a prohib pistol to make it restricted? SW Model 18

I have been helping my step-dad sell his firearms, now that his health prevents him from shooting. He has a wonderful prohib Smith and Wesson model 18 22LR revolver, for which he has 12(6) license. Its barrel length is *just short* of the length threshold.

This pistol would be easier to sell and for more $$, if this pistol were restricted and not prohibited. Has anyone on this forum had personal experience with rebarrelling a 12(6) pistol, and subsequent reclassification as a restricted firearm?

thanks,
Stephen

Rebarelled a Luger. Made the barrel, installed it and then contacted the CFP techies. I sent some pictures, and the new carts were mailed out. It was quite easy for me.

Experience with Luger rebarrel. Straightforward reclassification procedure. The original barrel will likely have to be surrendered.
However, unless a suitable barrel is available for a reasonable price, it might not be cost effective to rebarrel the piece.

You won't get enough extra to cover the cost of the re barreling and the hassle of re registration . For a revolver you can count on several hundred dollars provided you can actually find a replacement barrel. I would only do it if the gun had sentimental value.

This.

Don't think so - the rifling has to be uninterrupted IIRC...

A friend of mine has done a few.
I havnt seen him do it but I’ve seen the finished product.

Slides a longer barrel sleave over existing barrel.
I think he honed out the longer barrel to slide over the existing barrel .
Epoxy it in place

Re-barrelling a Liberal prohib model 18 is pointless. You will spend more money & gunsmithing services acquiring, if you can, a replacement barrel.

Generally, the competitive market has moved on from 22 revolvers to autos. S&W will NOT sell barrels, frames or cylinders to owners, so you must seek the services of gunsmith who can get these special parts. Maybe....

S&W model 18's are not in demand or are model 618's. You might have to eat this one due to no fault of your own.

You could make a barrel sleeve.

The existing barrel is bored out and a longer sleeve installed internally. The portion projecting from the original muzzle is larger in diameter, to match the diameter of the original barrel.
The sleeve is one piece, end to end, and longer than 105mm.
Rifling is irrelevant.

Ya, I couldn’t remember exactly how he did them.
I’ve seen a few that he did and it looked pretty good.

He’s offered to do a prohib Colt python for me, but now that the new ones are out, I’m going that route.

Your dad can also simply sell the gun to another 12(6) person and use the money made to buy a non prohib .22 revolver.

There's about 2 or 3 people left alive with a 12(6) license (I jest, but barely). They are all old cagey buggers with a safe full of prohibs. They really don't want to buy another, but want to see pictures :)

It's a firearm with a lot of sentimental attachment to the owner. Part of easing into old age (and agelessness, as that's gonna follow) is knowing that your toys are going to good homes, and will be well loved. That might be easier as a restricted.

I once did 2 .38 revolvers . A gunsmith drilled out the 4" barrel & installed a barrel liner that extended out of muzzle by 1/2"
thereby making the barrel 4 1/2" . It was a while ago but I think I paid $ 250. each ??
One month ago I sent a 4" barred Luger to Dlaskarms . They just called & said it is done & mailing back to me this Friday.
They remove & turn in to police the old barrel . They install their new 4 1/4" barrel . They do the paperwork to change
class to restricted. Price quoted was $375. + tax & shipping . They will sell you the barrel if you are able to chamber
& fit it.
