Any feedback on Elite 4200 4-16x40 SF?

love mine, put in on my LH HB 22-250. The only negative for me is the lack of reticle options or the ability to have a custom reticle installation done. Leupold has set the bar pretty high in this regard.

DISCLAIMER: I KNOW THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE 4200 SPECIFICALLY. PLEASE SAVE THE FLAMING.

I used an Elite 3200 5-15x40 AO on a Tikka T3 Lite in .300 WSM for 4 seasons and never once had a problem with fogging, loss of zero, or freezing of the dials.

It was as good the day I sold the rig - as a package deal - as it was when I took it home.

I just got this particular scope and the optics are pretty decent, I have a number of high end scopes (Leupold/Swarovski/S&B) and this one obviously isn't in the same class as those one but it is pretty bright until you get past 14x - at 14-15-16x it is workable but not ideal probably because it has only a 40mm objective. The reticle is fine enough for precision shooting. It is a really long scope however I noticed that this is the case with most of the Elites... If I had to pick between this scope and the Leupold VXII 4-12x40mm AO (close to the same price) I probably would go with the Leupy as I like the clarity of the optics but this is definitely no slouch... I put it on my Sako Quad.

You must have the AO version, they are freakishly long...

Bassman: The OP is asking about the AO model (SF - I assume he is referring to the Side Focus) which as you aptly described freakishly long. For light work like a rimfire it is pretty good as it has all the nice features that say something like Nikon has but definitely has better coatings. I looked through the Nikon equivalent from the Phillipines and man that scope is not very good (IMHO) it may be cheaper but you can really see the difference.

There is an AO model with the adjustment mechanism on the objective (hence the term Adjustable Objective) and the newer SF version that has the adjustment mechanism on the side of the turret (hence the term side focus) which is a fair bit shorter due to not having the adjustment on the objective.

The OP is referring to the SF version, one of which I have and have given feedback about. He is not referring to the longer AO version.

SF (Side Focus) 4-16x40 Elite 4200

You're right Bassman, it's exactly that model I'm looking for.
My preferred local store tags it at $530.00 + taxes.
I think I'll give it a try. There's another model with a 50mm. bell up front but I tend to prefer 40mm. scopes because I can have the lowest line of sight with them.
Thanks for the feedback, guys!
PP.

bassman: I have the SF model not the Front AO scope. It is in my opinion too long (I find all of the Elite Series Scopes too long compared to a simlar model from another company) and at higher mags too dark. It still functions well but I am not a huge fan of the Elite series of scopes - they are not bad but I prefer Leupold's coatings they appear brighter to my eyes. Hence my recommendation of going for a Leupold...
