Any Glowing Recommendations for a 9mm or 45acp Revolver?

Bob,

tkcustom .com makes great moonclips. You can get them at Brownells. Man I got the wheelgun itch, I'm just waiting to hear back to see if I was quick enough to get that 27-2 that's listed on the boards right now.

Well Bob add a decent holster to those moonclips and you should be ready to go. If you're looking for leather I recommend Bob Mernickle he makes a great product and is relatively quick.

I am going to have Ken Soucie cut the barrel down to 4.XX" so it is IDPA compliant in the US as well as in Canada then likely go for a Blade Tech kydex rig. I'll shoot it a bit before sending it down to Ken. He does great work and is provides fast turnaround.

9mmRevolvers.jpg

Here are a few of my 9mm revolvers; sorry for the quality of the photo. A couple of S&W 547s, An S&W 940 and a pair of Ruger Speed Sixes. Ruger did make a 9mm on the Six platform with a wire spring extractor. This design was not a complete success and is seldom seen in North America and were intended for the European police market, especially France. I believe I saw one on the hip of a police officer in Paris, but it was only a quick glance. In addition to these, the others I know of are the Ruger Single Six Convertible, the Astra Barracuda (which was also sold by FN) and some exotics such as the Medusa and Korth. Charter Arms says their new rimless revolvers will be out early 2010. Charter was having a patent issue with the extactor which has delayed the introduction. I believe the complainant was Ruger.

S&W made one 942 for Wiley Clapp who reported the recoil was not pleasant! The 940 has a snappy recoil making shooting sessions short. Several folks have purchased S&W 642s and replaces the cylinder with a 940 cylinder yielding an unoffical 942. Some have rfeplaced the barrel as well, but those that have not say accuracy is unaffected. I have not slugged a .38 nor a 9mm barrel so I don't know if the barrels have a different bore. Some claim S&W did not make 9mm barrels for the revolvers.

The 547 is more than a model 15 with a 9mm cylinder. The internals are quite different. Firstly, the cylinder has extractors to engage the groove of the case which eliminates the need for moon clips. Secondly, there is a second pin which strikes the case momentarily after the firing pin strikes the primer. This second pin prevents setback of the fired case preventing the cylinder from binding. If you take the side plate off a 547 and another K frame, the differences in the mechanism is obvious. Off course the most noticeable difference with other K frames is the semi bobbed hammer spur.

The 547 is my favourite S&W revolver and I prefer it over my other K frames. Accuracy is better than my .38s and .357s. Other shooters report the same results. Two of my 547s came from Israel as surplus, one was purchased new and the others were picked up at gun shows. There is a lot of current interest in the 547 which has resulted in high prices. Hopefully S&W will re-introduce it some day.

Gun is gone. I hear it is heading west to Terrace, BC.:D Bought it this morning. Looking forward to joining the wheel gunners on the line. Anyone got an idea where a guy can pick up 30 moon clips?

LOL

I think the universe is pushing towards a 45-70 revolver!

Congrats on a nice gun. :)

Looks like I'm in the market for a 625, 547, and/or maybe a super black hawk convertible along with that 45-70 gov't.

Root hog or die!

While living in the US I owned a 3" bbl. 547. Enjoyed it immensely. A very good 'smith I know in the states, polished the internal surfaces, and it had the best trigger of any gun I owned. Quite accurate. I have a "new" 547 now with a "restricted" bbl. added to it. They're really very good revolvers, just as Tekarra described. If you can find one, you'd be well advised to get it.

Gun arrived today. Gun is like new. I have enough moon clips to get me started and have ordered 30 more plus a loading tool and a demooner.

THX1139, are you going to use this revolver for a particular shooting discipline? If you're a man of monetary means (say that quickly three times) and you're interested in a solid cowboy gun, Freedom Arms in Wyoming makes one heck of a single action wheel gun. I've examined and shot a few of them, and they're tighter than a duck's butt.

Freedom Arms now offers a 9mm cylinder for their Model 97 revolver. I've never asked anyone at the company if they'd be willing to sell this gun with only a 9mm cylinder. From all accounts, though, they seem to be accommodating folks. :)

If you get one, I'd be happy to help you break it in. ;)
