Any good tactics/techniques for wolf hunting?

While hunting partridge in Oct along Sandy river two wolves were stalking me and my pointer.. Turned around and saw them on the trail for 5 seconds 50 metres behind us. Very bold. Probably after my dog.

They are often in good concentrations of Big game, go where the game are. My first day of deer hunting I heard them calling 3 times in 6 hours..I was in the thick of it. lots of tracks lots of poop...didn't hunt deer in that area very long after that, too much competition. I shot one this year while looking for moose so really just plain luck, I would think they were doing the same but I could tell they had used the same trail before.

Well....I know several trappers in Northern Sask. that take ALOT of Wolves trapping in remote areas....and they use bait sets they set leg drags or snares on trails leading into the sets.....these areas are as remote as they come and the Wolves are NOT frequenting "garbage dumps" so I have to call B.S on your story.

X2 also leave a set on the sled trail with a drag. That's what they do up here too for wolves. And yup baiting works and these wolves aren't garbage dump wolves. I haven't done this but is what some old trappers and natives say up this way.

Depends how hard up they are for a meal. When hunting caribou in the north we found wolves wouldn't even touch gut piles as there was too much warm meat running about.

There has bin some recent studies that one should look into. A friend of mine owns a guide outfit and brought this up last night, as ive bin considering doing some serious wolf hunting this winter. F&W had a outfitters meeting down island last Wed/Thurs night that he attended and brought up a very disturbing fact that they have discovered. Yes the wolves are absolutly out of control agian, but evern worse ... Aparently when you shoot a wolf , exspecially out of a large pack " 15-20 animals " if the animal that you take is high up in the rank of the pack it can cause the pack to have dessension and split into as many as 3 or 4 smaller packs that will spread out cover more ground and multiply faster destroying even more wildlife faster. F&W's point was if your going to shoot them they want you to be in a positon to get the majority of the pack at once if not the whole pack. Shooting one wolf at a time can actually increase the population even faster. Its like there a FK'n desease !

Just facting out here , also the main reason wolves are so bad is because they actually wont eat rotting flesh ... as soon as there game remotely turns they will seek out another animal rather that eating on a large animal until its gone. I actually have seen some documentary's about wolves that has taken an inside look on there personality's that made me have second thoughts about shooting them ... those feelings are gone. We need a damn good culling right now !

Have used bait of road killed moose and moose scraps from hunted moose as that is what they are used to here. No luck howling one in but me and the guys I hunt with have called in several and all with a dying rabbit call - either hand held or e-caller. If you use a hand call, get a double reed as they dont seem to freeze up in really cold weather. I like the Primos brand double reed rabbit call.

They work - I missed one two days ago after calling with my hand call and we got this one this AM with an eelctronic caller. Call loud, wait 4 or 5 minutes between series over 45 minutes.
