Any gotchas to beware of when dropping r700 into Bell & Carlson medalist stock?

Hey All,

I've got a B&C Medalist varmint/tactical stock coming soon (not soon enough though, lol) and I'd like to hear of people's experiences when installing it. From what I hear and read it's supposed to literally be 'drop in'... but I'd prefer to hear from someone who's done it personally. Or any advice, for that matter.

Hey Blsonne, where did you order the B&C stock from? I'm torn between that stock and a Choate Tactical that Mystic is bringing in. :)
 
I ordered mine through Aftermarket Innovations; I've been dealing with a gent by the name of Jim Nasset.

I lost some email so I got ahold of them today to check when I ordered and what the ETA was. B&C is busy as hell and it will probably be another 7-8 weeks. I suppose I was overoptimistic in hoping to have it in time for the ORA precision practices at Borden in July :(

Blsonne, when did you place the order?
 
It will fit good as is for sure, just as easy as taking your'e factory stock off and then on. Drop it in snug it up, tap the butt on the floor once or twice to make sure the recoil lug is tight against the back of its recess, then torque to 60-56 in/lbs and youre done. Off course a bedding job is technicaly better but definatly not required for good results.
 
I recently received (after an 18 month wait) a Rem 700 MTNSS in 280 Rem.... That's a stainless , pencil thin 22" long barrelled rifle that weighs in at 6.5lbs.

It comes with a Bell & Carlson aramid-fiber-reinforced stock (whatever that is), to say it needed to be bedded is like saying Rosie O'donel could loose a few pounds!

Aluminum bedding block, pillars, etc. all was good, except the recoil lug was sitting in a 1" void. When I removed the action screws and bottom metal I could move the barreled action 1/2" front to back and I could spin the action 1/4 turn side to side...... I tried shooting it that way and it was a respectable 2" 5-shot groups at 100y. After bedding factory ammo (Fusion 140gr), was just over 1", I call it 1.25" - 1.5", that IMHO is a significant improvement!

After building a load..... 5-shot groups are between .8" and 1.25"..... But I digress.....

Bell & Carlson Stocks are ALWAYS in need of Bedding......
 
I purchased the same stock about 4 years ago for my SPS Varmint .308. It dropped in with the exception that the bolt handle when closing just barely scuffs up where it touched the new stock. Much better accuracy than the factory stock and I can run a piece of paper between barrel and stock, therefore free floating barrel.
 
I ordered the same stock from Aftermarket Innovations. Jim is a good fellow to deal with. He was always willing to update me as best he could on my order. I ordered mine in the first week of February, but since B&C is swamped, it took 18 weeks to get to my door. I love the feel of the stock. I am planning on bedding it. However, the barreled action dropped in nicely and the factory bottom metal fit perfectly. I couldn't find any problems with the factory inletting. I did however, replace the hingeplate magazine withe a PTG DBM and that takes a fair bit of work. I spent about 10 hours dremmeling carefully. Just thought I'd let you know in case you were planning on doing that in the future.
 
Thank you for the information and advice, folks! :) I have wondered about what would be involved with replacing the internal magazine with an external one, but that's for another day.

Same here, I put the factory bottom metal in just to test fit it. Never did shoot it with it in there. Then I spent the next 4 evenings working on getting the new DBM to fit. Now I think I am going to spend the next few evenings prepping for and bedding it.
 
Still trying to figure out where I can find and buy JB-Weld and Minwax off the shelf in the T-dot. Getting sick of buying things online. Went to Canadian Tire, could find no JB.
