Any Hammerli and Anschutz experts here , trying to work out what i have

That's a Hammerli model 820 or later Smalbor version made in the mid 50's- early 60's.

Here's the details:

http://www.rifleman.org.uk/Hammerli_Target_Rifle.htm

this one has a set trigger, one you pul then a 2nd one in from that lets off with 2,3oz
that one looks like a single trigger
also cant tell from the link you sent, but the one i have has a very heavy barrel, prob 1 inch or more at the chamber
do you think its the same gun?

It looks similar to the Hammerli Model 820 smallbore match rifle, although the rear sight is different. It's also similar to the Hammerli Model 45 Match rifle and Model 54.

Please show a few more photos.

You lucky bugger!

I see yours is all original.

I just got one at auction but the stock has been molested or as some target shooters would call it "customized".

Since I had no idea about these before I started bidding I tried to do some research, but info is sparse. Yours looks like the model 54 given the design at the front of the receiver where it joins the barrel. That would put it in the 50s.

Mine would seem to be a model 503. It also has a double set trigger which someone online said makes it a model 504. It would be from the 60s.

The rear sight is on yours is different than mine and mounts on a drilled and tapped side of the receiver. My rear sight mounts on dovetails on top of the receiver, and both front and rear of the receiver are dovetailed with 11mm so a scope can be easily mounted without modification. Mine came with the factory adjustable hand rest for free style shooting. Your 54 likely had one of those from the factory and it would have looked different than mine. I see you also have the little Hammerli hammer proof mark indicating hammer forged barrel I do believe. The front of the stock forend on yours is slanted while mine is straight cut, and the forend on mine is more robust/rounded. Is the accessory rail intact underneath your forend?

You're right CD, BB's Hammerli rifle looks like a 54 Match, the 820 was the predecessor and the 54 had the updated bolt.

I've also seen the auction for your rifle a few weeks ago, with the double set trigger it's probably a 504 since the 503 and 505 didn't have it.

I have a beautiful 506 on the way, can't wait to shoot it.

Thanks for sharing!

I have a fair number of books in my gun library and even those are sparse on info relating to Hammerli rifles.

The older 820 had that unusual bolt with the smaller diameter extension on the front that actually went inside the receiver completely. I forget what that design was called?

Then they went with a more conventional bolt face design with the model 54 I believe?

Was the model 45 and 820 the same rifle?

It seems like you have a much greater knowledge about these rifles than others I have bumped into. And I know what sort of collection of handguns you have as you have shared stories with the rest of us about some of your gems and had others up for sale. Obviously you are a connoisseur of fine firearms. ;)

Went digging and BBB's Hammerli is a model 45 Match. The pistol grip and butt plate hook is different on the 54 and 820. The 45 was also called "Smalbor" and was manufactured from '45 till '57. The 820 was the initial model and was named after the actual sight radius of the rifle which is 820mm. The model 54 was manufactured from 1954 till 1957 with the common double locking lugs bolt.

The beauty of the 90 degrees or 12 o clock bolt early design made it easy to clear the eye piece of the diopter mounted in a low position, closer to the receiver.

Thanks for the further info.

So did the 45 Match still retain, from the 820 model, that unusual bolt with smaller diameter at the front design?

Did some looking in my books and found some old values from the 70s but few details on the different models, and it would seem that the 45 Match is the rarest and worth the most of all Hammerli rimfire rifles. And the one BBB has there appears to be unmolested in original condition.

As for prices, the 2016 Gun Digest book of modern gun values "Phillip Peterson & Andrew Johnson"

Model 45: Exc: $725 VG : $610 Good: $500

Model 54: Exc: $760 VG : $640 Good: $550

Model 503: Exc: $700 VG : $580 Good: $510

Model 505: Exc: $695 VG : $550 Good: $450

Model 506: Exc: $695 VG : $600 Good: $550

Take it as a grain of salt, these rifles are so uncommon that they could probably fetch 2x-2.5x these prices on the current market.

Thanks so much for the info.

As for price, well that depends on scarcity in Canada and demand. You know what I paid for mine, and it all depends on how badly you want one and the fact I have not seen one for sale since I was a young guy without funds to afford something like that. :) And of course those are US prices so figure in exchange.

Will likely not be testing it now until spring unfortunately. I am not a cold weather shooter unless there is by chance a mild day without wind. So it has been cleaned and oiled and put away for safe keeping.

Actually when I got it was filthy. The bore was perfect but the outside was covered in dust and dirt and looked awful. I recently picked up a product called Ballistol (uncommon and pricey in Canada) and used it on this rifle for the first time. It is supposed to be good for metal, wood and leather. So I put some on a small piece of flannel cut from an old shirt and rubbed down the wood with the result the patch turned black, but the wood came out shining with the lovely walnut grain. I did the same on the metal with another piece and again the dirt that came off was a surprise and the matte bluing turned deep black. I then rubbed the metal down with an oily cloth I keep on the bench in a margarine container and put a few drops of Hoppes gun oil on the adjustments of the rear sight which now turns smoothly instead of roughly like before.

So bore and metal are pretty much excellent except for butt end of stock being hacked on. It should be a shooter and I plan to put a scope on it to give it a try as well.

Take Care HC.
