any HK SL-8 owners

again thanks guys for the personal experiences and input, but i think i'm going to pass on this one. 1)i'm still a newbie at all this and don't want the hassle of having to ship a firearm back for servicing and 2) i agree with others that the SL8 is a bit overpriced.

I would love one. But if I bought one I would HAVE to get the kit that makes it look like the G36. I would have to invest way to much money... Then again, whats a Colt AR15 worth on trade? ;)

Eh, not much really. I can trade you for some blank Maxell DVD-R's...

I paid 2150 for mine from Wolverine. Those folks are great, too, BTW, they treated me like a king.

The thing's ergonomics are revolting when you first shake hands with the gun, but they rapidly grow on you. At first it felt like I was shooting either a Super Soaker or a 2" x 6". Once you get past that, though, it really begins to shoot!

The guys are right about the looks too. If the AR is to be called a 'black rifle' then the SL8 should be called the 'ugly rifle'. My reply to that is that looks are only skin deep.

The HK is a fine rifle but it is not for everyone. If you don't mind the restrictions on the AR then they are the way to go.

saw a guy plug a 1/8" thick nail from 100 yds. wanted one ever since. I've read that the -4 or -5 's are preferable to the -1, not sure why though. Aside form the light gray colour, that is.

The only thing bad I have to say about the SL8, is that I wish I could have 30rd G36 Mags!! Actually, I DO find the tigger a little to heavy, and would like to lighten it up. All in all, a damn fine arm, with serious look cool factor and definately very accurate.

I converted mine to a G36 clone with a SW stock and a G36 mag that I got off of a fellow CGNer.
I absolutely love it!!
Not too shabby for an unrestricted firearm.:D
I just ordered the G36 scope and carrying handle from Wolverine. Can't wait to pick that up.

I believe the SL8 can be easily altered to accept the AR mags too, but I don't know what is involved with that.

Yep, the rifle comes with one ugly trigger...but it is not as big a handicap as one might think. I suppose if you were hunting trophies and gold medals you would have to do something about it but for the average turkey like me, I prefer to live with it.

Orvis are you buying that integral handle/scope thing? I would really like to know how that works out for you and how much it costs.

Yes, it's the integral handle/scope.
You can get the scope version for around $500.00 and the RDS/scope version for around $900.00 @ Wolverine.

Orvis what kind of ammo are you feeding yours? I am working loads up now but my rifle does not like the lighter bullets by the look of it, it is spraying the 55 grainers into 2-3" at 100 yards and the 62 grainers aren't much better.

I just bought some of the Hornady 75 gr. match bullets but haven't been able to try any of those handloads yet.

Have you found a load that you could share with a newbie? I have heard that these rifles will go sub-MOA if you feed them right...

Naa, I just use whatever commercial ammo I can get my hands on. Normally Winchester.

Quote from dsd74: Orvis, I really need to find that g36 stock. Where could I find one? Does Wolverine carry them too?
I bought mine from a fellow CGNer. I don't think any dealers in Canada sells them.

I have just started loading for my SL8, Orvis, and for some reason I had no luck at all with the light weight stuff. Last night I stoked up some 75gr. Hornady HPBT match bullets and the groups came in just barely under 1 MOA. Sweet! I was using 23.8 gr. of W748 and Federal premium match primers.

I am going to go heavier yet on my next experiment.

Try the Hornady 68gr HPBT match. Start your loads real light because of the twist on the SL-8. You should not have to go heavier that 68gr to get good groups. Besides 75 is the longest you will get in an AR mag.

I was using 21gr WC845 surplus. I would check the load data for H335 (quite similar). I have found that most 223 semis like ball powder and boat tail bullets, not scientific just a trend.

I just bought an SL8 yesterday! Even though I've only put about 100 rounds through it, it's safe to say that I'm in love.

I traded in my Bushmaster Carbon 15, so in the end it was ~$1500 -- which still isn't cheap.

For any of you who own one, did you find that you had to adjust the iron sights at all out of the box? I was shooting at 50m and it was giving me great groups, but all of them where low and to the left. WWB 55grain and Remington UMC 55grain. I had the front on bags, so it was pretty steady... Any ideas? Do I just maybe need to put a few hundred more rounds through it?
