I just bought a used S&W 19-4 revolver, excellent condition and surprisingly nice to shoot. Want to know more about this nice gun and how to keep it in shape, any ideas?

Nice choice! To keep the finish in good shape wipe it down after a range session and keep a light coat of gun oil or Break Free or something like that on the exterior and in the bore when it's in storage (remember to dry out the bore with a clean patch before shooting again!). Don't go crazy with the magnum rounds--the K frame can't handle as much pounding as an L or N frame, but on a steady diet of .38's with a bit of .357 magnum thrown in it'll last forever. If it still has the factory grips I'd replace them with something like a set of Hogues or Pachmayrs.

Thank you Master-G. I want to know more about the history of this gun and the meaning of 19-4, can anyone help. Besides, is there any relation between the model 19 and model 10? Just want to learn more.

The Model 10 and Model 19 are both built on the S&W K frame (the frames run J (e.g. Chief's Special), K, L (e.g. 586/686), N (e.g. Mod 27 or 29... I think the new .500 S&W's are X Frame?). The Model 10 is .38 only, while the Model 19 is .357. I was not too familiar with the "-4" so a quick Google turned this site up with some good info on the Mod 19.

The -4 refers to each time S&W made a revision to the design of the gun. Each time the factory made an improvement, it was recorded so that if work needed to be done on the gun, the correct parts would be used. Many of these changes would be too subtle for ordinary shooters to notice, but are important for an armourer or gunsmith to know about.

These are great guns but use the .357 sparingly and it will last a long time.

Had a 4" 19 long ago. Sold it for nearly what I paid for it about 5 years later. (The GP100 that replaced it fits my hand better.) Mind you, the trigger had been done. Shot bullseye with it for years.
Use .357 brass loaded to .38 Special velocities and it won't give you any trouble. If it means anything, the 19 was Skeeter Skelton's(an old, deceased, gun mag hack) favourite.

Thank you guys, your information help a lot. I'm quite new to the sport (just started shooting 1.5 years ago) but very interested to know more about the make-up of a gun, and of course, want to shoot better. I have a Ruger GP-100 too. It's nice to shoot but the trigger pull is pretty heavy. One more question on the 19-4, do anyone know how to dissemble it for a detail cleaning?

Nice revolver.
I picked one up a few months ago.
Not sure if it is a -4 ,but it does have the countersunk chambering.
For all the info you've ever wanted,go to the Smith & Wesson forum board.
Those guys can answer almost anything for you.
